Oh wow, this has just been recently bothering me as well. I just had that whole epiphany that the mirror is a reversed image of my face, and everyone sees it the other way. It really sucks. In the mirror, I look mostly even, my eyes are a little different, and by jaw line in very slightly deviated but I can live with it. Then I take a look into the webcam (the unreversed, true image) and what I see really makes me feel deformed. The entire left side of my face seems to me angled upwards. The eyebrow and eye are higher, my cheeks jaw seems sunked in and pulled, and holy hell do my teeth look terrible. The top and bottom rows have an ENORMOUS gap on the one side. Gah.... I used to think I was a decent looking guy...

Sorry for expressing my self loathe and pity on this topic. lol

I'm so glad other people feel the same way I do! This thing has been bothering me for the past two years, and I feel like I can't take it any longer. My chin is deviated to the right and my lower right jaw is noticeably undeveloped. On top of this, I have a deviated septum. The funny thing is that I take extremely beautiful pictures from the left side of my face. If both sides of my face looked the way my left side I would be extremely pleased and confident with the way I look. But I take very un-aesthetically pleasing ones from the right.

Like most of you have already stated, it's harder to see my asymmetry in front of a regular mirror...but when I pull out the double mirror...It just makes me want to cry.

People tell me I'm very pretty and attractive, but I simply can't see it. I struggle so much everyday because I'm constantly fighting two emotions--1) Should I be happy with my overall normal appearance and find my worth in God, not my appearance, like I know I should? OR 2) Should I just do something about it...get surgery...what's so wrong about fixing something I don't like about myself if I have the simple desire and the means? If I don't get it done, it will probably bother me till the day I die...

I recently had surgery on one of my ears because it was very pointy. It's bothered me since I was in high school. No one ever noticed it before and no one noticed it afterward (except the people I told...). I have no regrets. I feel so much better about putting my hair up and behind my ears. I could care less that other people hadn't a clue. The fact that I felt better was all that mattered...perhaps I should apply this to my current situation...

I really am amazed that so many people have the same problem as me.. you would think that with so many people with this problem, I would have actually SEEN at least one other person with it, in real life. Maybe I have, and things like this really aren't that noticable to others?

hi again
Unlike many of you, my asymmetry is noticeable (at least by me) by looking at myself in a normal mirror.

In the last months i've realized lots of new things about my asymmetry.

-I used to think the main problem were my cheekbones, but i noticed that the left part of my upper skull (the area between the ear and the eye) is also different from the right one.

-As i said before, my cheekbones are pretty asymmetric. The left one is much larger than the right one. But i realized that it's not only the cheekbones, the whole upper jaw is deviated to the left.

That's the reason why my upper teeth doesn't match with my lower teeth. My front upper teeth are not located at the center of my mouth but a little to the left (about 1cm). Also, my bite is far from being perfect.

I understand all of you in thinking about getting surgery. Beleive me, i've given it a lot of thought and i've come to the conclusion that there's nothing wrong in getting surgery to improve your looks, everyone deserves a decent and normal face.

This "thing" has severely damaged my confidence and selfsteem. I'm currently 22 years old and since the day i realized my face was asymmetric (4 years ago) my life has been like a nightmare.

I don't know about you, but i don't want to feel this way my whole life. I don't know when, but i'm definitely getting surgery.

hey
wow, i read through a few hours worth of posts and have been putting off googling "asymetrical faces" because i was terrified to see what was out there. Reading some of these posts made me feel better but also some of them were completely rediculous with normal people with just minute imperfections and exagerations that it makes me feel even worse.
i have yet to see pics up on here of people that look like me. i have a cleft palate or whatever you call it and my face is so damned asymmetrical that unless i consciously remember to "straighten my jaw" my lower lip pretty much covers my left upper lip. That is how much my jaw curves to the left. Also, my right ear is what looks like 1" (maybe a lil less) higher than the left side and MY NOSE is WAY crooked, and one nostril is noticeably bigger than the other.

I still go out and party,im funny, smart and like to have fun but i suck at meeting new people right off the bat because i fear my looks make a bad first impression.

nose
Hi. It really bugs me now that my nose is slightly assymmetrical. It used to be perfect. Then I didn't sleep one night, was very tired, and banged it one morning and broke the nasal bone on the left side, as was shown on the x ray. It was a hairline fracture and it was not even displaced.
It would have been perfectly fine had I left it alone, but I was freaking out, and convinced that it was crooked to the right side at the top so I SLEPT on my nose on the right side, even though I felt that the cartilage at my tip was feeling weird-like, I felt it to be kind of crunchy. Anyway, on that side of my nose, it kind of goes down a bit now, due to my having put pressure on that of my nose while sleeping while it was healing. After 1 week, the nose hardens, because I tried to sleep on the other side when I noticed this fault and it didn't work anymore. Go figure. I was SUCH an fool. That was 5 years ago and I'm still kicking myself over it. I really did like my nose before.

wow
Reading these comments makes me not feel so like the only one! my LHS is normal and my RHS is quite underdeveloped - my jaw line is weaker and "steeper" than the left and not straight at all and to look from the RHS of my face my nose and teeth look bigger?? Front on i look normal. It has taken sooo long to work out what is wrong with my face, what makes me look hideous in photos but i feel better now that i can pin point my dilemma! I really want to get something done about it but there's the overcoming of the label you get when you get plastic surgey! And the risk of guilt if it turns out worse than you started!!! Thanks for starting this chat!

Facial symmetry is defined by the levels of testosterone you are exposed to in the womb.
It has nothing to do with the way you sleep or any other external/environmental factor.
for example the right side of the face for most people will appear as the 'unattractive' or more masculine side ie the jaw will be slightly longer the eye lower - maybe lending to a droopy appearance. the left side will appear more attractive as it is the more feminine side. The more testosterone you were exposed to the greater the differences in each side will appear. The more oestrogen (sp) the more 'feminine' symmetry
you will have.
There is a very small minority with extremely symmetrical faces - models, actors etc and im sure they have their own insecurites - celebrities more often than not do.
Anyway who wants to look like a computer generated image, it takes all of the humanity and the character out of your face to be perfectly symmetrical
So you shouldnt worry about doing this, or not having done that or shaving bits off your face or adding them on or any of that other nonsense as the way you look is predetermined in the womb.
The more happy you are with your appearance on the inside the more beautiful you will appear on the outside and that is the TRUTH and honestly the more you stare in the mirror and take pictures the more distorted your self image will become - so leave it all alone!! i have and i feel much better!
And always remember -
"True beauty is a ray, That springs from the sacred depths of the soul, and illuminates the body, just as life springs from the kernal of a stone and gives colour and scent to a flower" - Khalil Gibran

I cant believe this
For 17 years I thought I was the only one who has this problem. I just recenly went to a maxillofacial surgeon and after he x rayed me: he told me that my problem was due to a fall when I was little. My jaw apparently broke or atleast fractured and never grew back. So my right side is a few centimeters higher than my left. This is somethig I've definatley noticed (especially in pictures) but I always thought I would just always have a crooked face. It wasnt until about a week ago when I realized that other people are goig through the same thing. I have an appointment scheduled about a month from now with the surgeon who will be preforming my procedure. From what I hear, it can take up to a year to prepare for orthognathic surgery. I heard I'll need to get braces to move my teeth over to the there new destination before the surgery and that aloe will take months. Worse part of all, my mouth will be wired shut for 4 weeks. OMG!! The bright side is maybe I'll be able to shed a few pounds. lol Anyway, to whoever is going through depression about they're looks...your not alone.

If you are considering surgery in the USA or Europe I would highly suggest you consider looking into going for surgery in South America. Brazil, Colombia and Argentina are all well known for there surgeons and they truly are a step above there USA and European counterparts. The one thing to consider when traveling to South America is travel distance Brazil and Argentina are much further than Colombia from Europe and the USA. In the case of the USA, Colombia is 2.5 hours from Miami and Brazil and Argentina 6-9 depending on where you are going. Now you have exchange rates Brazil has the strongest currency exchange rate vs the Dollar and Euro therefore the savings is not really comparable to Argentina and Colombia. So in my opinion I would say you are now left to choose between Argentina and Colombia. I have been researching many companies in all of these countries and you can see from my written passage here I have done my research. When comparing all factors as to Board Certified Physicians, Accommodations, Customer service, Price, Travel time, and overall experience of previous clients. I would say dollar for dollar the best company I have found is Cosmetic Harmony. I have been receiving quotes from so many companies over the past 5 months trying to figure out with one to choose. My experience with them Cosmetic Harmony has been nothing but top notch. First of all they have as USA office in Florida. #1 thing that made me feel comfortable. They also have a Panama office and then of course a Colombia one. I requested a quote from them which I received in 2 hours unlike some other companies which I received weeks later or never got back to me. The staff speaks English and yes English I could understand perfectly. There employees are clients as well that is HUGE!! Board Certified Physicians another huge factor. When I asked to speak to previous clients no problem they gave me plenty and they are all happy with there results. They are just on it really organized and really professional. I felt so comfortable with them. There price was slightly higher than some of the quotes I received from other companies but seriously you have to consider this I am already saving a tremendous amount of money by going there I can't logically risk my health and safety for a few dollars. So there is my recommendation for all of you #1 choice Cosmetic Harmony . I hope this helps you all!!

Doesn't seem abnormal
I was aware of this in myself and was surprised to see how many others saw it in themselves. If I look and watch I see it in a lot of people. I think it is just normal.

I HATE IT!
I'm glad I came upon this thread because this is something that has been bugging me for a couple of yrs now. I'm 27 yrs old and oddly enough I hadn't noticed ALL of my imperfections until 2 yrs ago. When I mean ALL I'm not kidding! My eyebrows are uneven, ears, lips, teeth, eyes, cheeks, chin and my nose is crooked. There is nothing symmetrical abt me and it is killing me now since it is most noticeable in pictures and the dreaded double mirror! Like many of you I too have been told I'm good looking and I think that as I grew older these imperfections became more pronounced. Maybe due to the fact that the cranial bones were still growing? I'm not sure when these bones are supposed to stop growing but the main thing I noticed in pics is that the left side of my face seems to be slightly larger and more curved/round than the right side. It appears that the cause of this might be my left cheek bone which I can feel and see is bigger than the right causing it to pop out more.? The right side of my face is razor straight! The weird thing is that my jaw is so pronounced and sharp on the right side that it also makes my face look hideous since the left is more rounded. This is most noticeable when I smile so I am not sure if I just have a crooked jaw that could be causing the whole problem. And yes I do have crooked teeth. sigh. This is absolutely killing my self esteem and I am torn with whether I should make an appt. to see my dr. to find out more abt this. I'm kind of embarassed about the whole thing and can't think of how I would go about telling him. He might send me to a shrink! lol...Anyways, I would post pics up but I'm not sure if this thread is still too active since it is from last year. Will wait for replies.

dude, i have the same problem. but i guess that if u didn't notice in 25 years maybe it's not so bad as mine (I noticed when i was 18 or 19).

And by the way, there's no point in going to a shrink cause the problem is real, not in your mind (unless your asymmetry is not noticeable).

Latino Loco, you've sparked my curiosity. The way you described yourself, you made it sound like you're disfigured. Please post pics. I'm sure you're not that bad.
