Hi my name is tara I am 21 years old.
Sometime last year I developed grittiness
in my eyes along w/ dryness which caused
me to keep touching my lashes and eyes to
get it out. I went to the opthamologist
and he only found dry eye. However, I
went back later and he said it was both
dry eye and blepharitis. He put me on
blephamide and erythomycin ointment and
doxyclcline tablets 1 per day. However,
I stopped using the tablets b/c I was
having a severe reaction to sunlight.
The blepharitis is still here and my
lashes are falling out to the point where
its definately noticable. When I go to
clean my lids and lashes they fall out!!!!
I am supposed to be coming off the
steroid/aintibiotic drop (blephamide)
soon. I can't get this condition under
control!! Does anyone know of effective
treatments that tame the oil production
and redness/grittiness in my eyes. He
said my meiobien glands were producing an
oily tear film thats not supposed to be
there.... Someone please help me...
Thanks alot tara

Iam 21 too, and have gone through all of
the stuff you mentioned above. I've had
blepharitis for about 3 years now and I
hate to scare you but it really doesn't
get any better. I've been on the steroid
drops, tried doxycycline, even had tubes
put in. I do my warm compresses 2 times a
day and use artificial tears on a daily
basis. I've never spoken to anyone with
blepharitis so I came here too looking for
some solution to blepharitis. My eye
doctor has done and given me everything
she could possibly do but still they are
the biggest pain in my life. You posted
this about a month ago, any leads so far?
I would love some tips on how to get rid
of the excessive oil production.

Tara and others who read this message,
i am writing as a fellow sufferer of
blepharitis(6yrs. I think too many are
suffering quietly and feel hopeless about
it. The time has come to realize that
this eye disorder has no cure and that we
must collectively become active and take
matters into our own hands in whatever
ways (even if it means just sharing
information with each other) to better
address this problem. Please spread the
word.

Thanks For Replying Posted: 07-30-06 14:53pm
Thank you guys for your help.... Sorry im
not online very much... However I will
check out that new site..... I have been
doing everything I can but my once
beautiful blues arent looking any better.
I wash everyday with baby shampoo and or
anti dandruff shampoo on my
lids....Sometimes I feel that the more I
clean my eyes the worse they get!! I
have been doing some very extensive
research on blepharitis and I have come to
find that certain herb combinations taken
both internally and topically (on the
lids) can help. However, what works for
some may not work for others. So far I
have run into a couple names if anyone has
any input on these herbal treatments feel
free to post.....
- eyebright
- burberry
- oregan seed
- echinacia
all three are supposed to help the
symtoms of the disease. Echnacia should
be taken internally to help boost the
immune system. Well...Here I go off to
spend some more money soon and hope for
the best... I'll keep ya posted.....

Tara,
i needed to give you and other blepharitis
sufferers perhaps some good news. Per my
conversations with a member on the
blepharitis forum I got what I consider an
excellent tip. I too had done the baby
shampoo and dandruff shampoo thing for
cleaning my eyelids and hated the
treatment- it always left my eyes feeling
red and irritated and left behind a
residue. I would only do them when I felt
really up to it. Well for the past couple
of days I have replaced this method with
cleaning the lids with a solution of
sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) 1/4
teaspoon mixed in 4 ounces of boiling
water then allowed to cool down to warm.
This clear solution is then applied with a
q-tip or other cotton pad. After 10-15
minutes I rinse once or twice with water.
I am astounded at how much better my eyes
feel- even after the first treatment had
time to take effect. This solution
dissolves the grime on the lids very
effectively. I would not have thought it
in a million years and nearly passed over
doing it because I had thought it would
not have any effect. Do it! Tell others!
I would avoid baking powder which is not
the same thing as sodium bicabonate.

Blepharitis & Castor Oil Posted: 08-18-06 17:04pm
Hi
my husband suffered from blepharitis for 8
months. It would not clear despite
being on antibiotics. Castor oil
cleared it in 11 days! Read about it
and recent research on this topic at:
for some reason this system seems to be
changing the case from lower to upper in
the link above. If you do a google
search on blepharitis + "castor oil" - you
should find the site.
It might work for you.

Blepharitis Posted: 09-08-06 15:37pm
I suffered from blepharitis for many years
and only found a solution for me about 10
years ago. Our twin babies had an eye
infection which resulted me in getting
conjunctivitis I was prescribed eye
(antibiotic) drops chloramphenicol and
found that it cleared up the
conjunctivitis but started to reduce the
inflammation and bittiness/grittiness of
my eyes as a result of the blepharitis. I
applied the drops for longer than I was
prescribed and found that it all cleared
up(it got to the point it when my eyes
felt dry and a little painful so I stopped
at that point). Since then I have had no
problems. The eye drops have to be
prescribed by a doctor (within the uk).
I used to find it embarrassing and tended
to wear tinted glasses to hide behind and
the discomfort was awful.
Please check out with your doctor that it
is ok for you.

Blephariris Underlying Cause Posted: 12-02-07 07:11am
Hi, you should thoroughly investigate
allergies as the hidden cause for
blepharitis, i.e. there is an a "hidden"
connection between blepharitis and
rosacea, and there is another article
about new evidence for Rosacea And Allergy
connection. I am not saying that's the
magic answer but should definitely
consider evidence in medical articles.
Good luck !!

No cure - Very Few Worthwhile tips and an horrible condition: Posted: 03-19-08 06:53am
You must accept it's uncurable, in my case
this took 10 years to accept, maybe your a
quicker learner than me and it might take
you 3 years. All the eye-washes, shampoos,
sodium bicarbonates have a good effect
for 2 hours only. But any good they do
damages the tear-film and you get dry-eye,
gritty eye flareup. The good tear film is
what you are really after. But you will
not get a good tear film because the BLEPH
prevents it.
It's ironic but just washing your eyelids
in hot water lightly is about the best you
can do. Somedays the result is good, other
days it doesn't appear to have done much
good and you get depressed over it. Right
now I'm experimenting with 1/2 glass of
hot water, add a pinch of sodium
bicarbonate, add one dispesible ASPIRIN
tablet [to reduce the inflammation] and
add a teaspoonful of honey, stir well, and
use it as an eye-wash. It seems to give 6
hours relief, thats 6 hours to read or
watch TV, but when you waken in the
morning MR BLEPHS been during the night,
and your lid movements are acute, painful,
and not good. I've tried all the Drs tabs,
all no use, Doxycillan scores 2, the rest
zilch. You might develop facial tics and
you need tranqulisers to steady your
facial nerves. I had my tear ducts sealed
to save tears, this I will recommend,
ignore your Drs advice about tears
streaming down your face - they don't, the
relief score here is 8. Thats a very big
8. in a world of 1 and 2. I would suggest
you drink i tablespoonful of cod liver oil
a day, it seems to be both anti-flam and
some of the oil gets on your eyeballs.
This scores 5 / maybe 6. I tried Coconut
oil, and linseed oil with poor results.
CoCoNUT oil might be the answer and might
be worth using. in the Pacific they drink
the stuff. I would like my tear glands
[not the ducts] squeezed clean but am told
it cannot be done. My post is honest, and
truthful. Bob .
