Worried Please Help
Posted: 04-12-06 10:05am

Hi.... I had unprotected sex back in mid october 2005 with an exboyfriend. Since then I thought nothing about it until I started feeling chronically ill lately. I gave blood with my family members in march 2006 and recieved a thank you note from the red cross. I am now worried that I may have passed on hiv or something to a person recieving this blood. What are my chances of having unprotected sex once with an xboyfriend of being hiv positive? I am so scared and ashamed..... Thanks alot

The red cross states in their informational packet for giving blood that if you test positive for hiv, they will notify you. Since they sent you a thank-you note, that's not the case. However, it can take around six months for hiv to be detected in a test, so since it's april now, you can go get tested pretty confident that it'd be positive if you really have it. Do you know if your ex had risk factors? Try not to feel ashamed... The chances are low. You're certainly not a bad person for having unprotected sex with a boyfriend. Good luck hun.

I'm not very well-versed on hiv, but that's what I understand. I was in your position last year, when I discovered an ex cheated on me multiple times. I got tested initially and was negative. When I started dating my now boyfriend, I got tested again just to be sure, and I was negative again. You said you've been chronically ill. What are some of your symptoms? No matter the reason, please call a doctor to assess your current illness.

It only takes three months to get a conclusive final test result, unless your are a daily iv drug user, on chemo, or taking rejection medicines for a transplant. If you answer no then 3 months will give you the conclusive results.
