You need to aviod foods that would have a high risk of carrying bacteria which could cause listeria. Contracting listeria (like food poisoning) could actually cause serious harm, or even cause miscarriage. (sorry I don't want to freak anyone out, but I knew a girl who actually got it, and she was lucky to keep her baby)
"risky" foods re pretty much the same as foods you'd be care full about usually- things that go bad quickly, or are extra suseptable to bacteria.
Shellfish.(how many times have you been sick after eating out and said to yourself- must've been th prawns/shrimp etc?)
uncooked or undercooked meat, fish, chicken.
Deli meats becuse you can never be sure how santary the conditions are in there- also, how carefull they have been about using different blades to cut raw and cooked meats. Also can't be sure how long things have been out for.
Pre-prepared salads etc- for the same reason as the deli stuff.
Unpasturised milk.
Soft cheeses especially where mould is part of it (bree, blue-vein etc). (ok if cooked but must be brought to boiling point- so only eat if you've done this yourself)
raw eggs.
Soft-serve ice-cream.
Goats-milk & cheese.
Fruit or vegetables with mouldy or very over-ripe bits (it is not enough to cut the bad part out, just cut your losses!)
also be very careful with dried fruit and also nuts.
Packaged deli meats-ham etc. Can also be risky in case they are contaminated between cooking and packaging. (sorry)
any left-overs or cooked food must be re-heated really well to a temperature that will kill bacteria, discard any refridgerated left-overs or cooked food after 24 hours.
Listeria is killed by cooking..
Limit tuna to 2 times per week.
Always be very careful about safe food handling practices- common knowledge things like washing your hands properly, using diferent knives and cutting boards for cooked meat, raw meat and vegetables.
