Q: Nuvaring, Breakthrough Bleeding...help!

I started on the nuvaring about 2 weeks ago, and I am having some pretty serious break through bleeding. It's a nasty brownish/maroonish colour. No smell but my period had stopped, but then this 'other' bleeding started. I am not impressed. Will this stop?

Plus sex is very painful and I cannot climax for the life of me. Which is frustrating for my boyfriend and me sometimes as well.

I have issues remembering and being able to stomach the pill (i throw up fairly easily). And I can't trust it if I am always throwing up. Plus it made me feel just horrible!

I refuse to go on depo, because of mood swings and weight gain issues.

What else is there?

Will these issues with nuva stop?

Help! I am so frustrated.

i am in canada by the way...Just in case you have some suggestions but they are maybe not available up here.

I totally understand and sympathize with you. I could never tolerate any birthcontrol that had some kind of hormone in it. The pill gave me migranes no matter how small the dosage and spermicide burned and irritated and gave me break through bleeding.

I don't know whats in nuvaring but if its not working for you, you are smart to look for an alternative method.

What about talking to your doctor about either an iud or a diaphram (if you are good about being able to slip the diaphram in before you have sex).

I Agree With Morning
I had that happen to me when I was on ortha tri cyclen or whatever. I had to switch to something with a lower dose hormone. Talk to your doctor and please switch your bc method k. I hope you get well soon..

I am on the patch (ortho-evra) and I think it is the best method of birth control. You just put one on once a week and the fourth week you dont have one on at all. It is exactly like the pill so, I suppose you could get one with a low dose of hormones, if it doesnt already.

Hi, thanks for all the replies. I woke up this am..And I feel so embarrassed saying this..But I was bleeding so bad, it was almost worse than when I had a miscarriage (5 months ago).

I dont think it's suppose to be this bad of bleeding. Is it?

It's like I got my period all over again, but it's not due for another almost 9 days (when I take the ring out). And now it's bright red blood.

My stomach is constansently gargling and making weird noises. Like gas?! There's no cramping.

Im seriously worried. I am going to the doctor. Ive never had a responce to bc like this before. And I am seriously sensitive to any medications even headache meds.

I am glad you are going to the doctor. Hopefully he will be able to help you figure out whats going on with your body and what alternative bc is good for you.

Please let us know what he says as I am sure you are not the only person with birth control issues.

Bad Experience W/ Nuva Ring
I had a bad experience with nuva ring over 3yrs ago when it was new on the market. I had yeast infections after like every other period when for the 6mos I was on it. Then during the 5th month it caused me to have terrible mood swings and pretty much a false pregnancy - my boobs got huge and were super tender, my lower abdomen retained water, and I had cravings. It was weird.. Nuva ring was a nice concept but I can't say anything positive about the experience.

As for different types of birth control if you want something w/o hormones the only thing I can think of would be a copper uid here's some info on that.

Copper t iud (intrauterine device) – an iud is a small device that is shaped in the form of a “t.” your health care provider places it inside the uterus. The arms of the copper t iud contain some copper, which stops fertilization by preventing sperm from making their way up through the uterus into the fallopian tubes. If fertilization does occur, the iud would prevent the fertilized egg from implanting in the lining of the uterus. The copper t iud can stay in your uterus for up to 12 years. It does not protect against stds or hiv. This iud is 99% effective at preventing pregnancy. You will need to visit your doctor to have it inserted and to make sure you are not having any problems. Not all doctors insert iuds so check first before making your appointment.

nuvaring
i spoke to my ob/gyn he said it takes your body up to 6 months to get use to nuvaring so your periods will be irregular and the brown blood is normal but he also said if its not normal in 6 months you should talk to your ob/gyn to switch your birth control
