Q: Is it Normal to have Swollen Tonsils after Septoplasty?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on April 3rd, 2006
I had septoplasty and all that jazz done a month ago. I am not as pleased with my recovery as I thought I would be. I kind of wonder why I even got it done. It WAS done due to chronic sinus infections and a severly deviated septum. I still have a lot of pain in my face, half my face is numb (but slowly getting better) and I have extreme dizziness when I stand out. I feel like I'm going to pass out.

Today was my one month follow up and he said I didn't need to be seen for another 3 months. I knew I should have asked about this, but I didn't... my tonsils are swollen and I get food caught in them very easily. As we speak I have what looks like a blood clot on one (I can't get rid of it no matter how much I gargle). I didn't want to tell him for fear of sounding like a hypercondriact, or the fact that he might want to take them out. Like I said, I won't be seeing him for another 3 months... is this something I should be concerned with now?

A deviated septum often causes chronic sinusitis; septoplasty is the only real treatment for chronic sinutitus in such cases. Be patient and soon you will feel the positive results from the operation. Swollen tonsils, however, are another problem altogether. If they are swollen due to acute inflammation, then antibiotics and local antiseptics can be enough to treat the condition. But if the tonsils are swollen due to chronic inflammation, then the removal of the tonsils can be considered. You can return to your doctor to follow up on the complications you are experiencing with your tonsils.
