Puzzling Situation... Anyone Have Any Clues? Posted: 04-03-06 19:12pm
This is a bit of a long confusing
story.... If you read all of this,
thanks for bearing with me.
I originally got my period when I was 13,
and had it for about a year.
During this year, my sister and I began
having problems, as we were both starting
to deal with some serious issues (god
knows what, life I guess) and took out our
frustrations on each other. This was
very hard on both of us, as we had
previously been very close, especially
before she went away to school, a few
years previous.
Also, that year, my parents were in the
middle of a divorce, and round october of
that year (2003), it was finalized. It
seemed to not be as upsetting as it should
have been. (the stress showed later,
though, as you'll see...)
about that time, give or take a month,
my period stopped, inexplicably. I was
in no way underweight, at 5"7 135 lbs, or
over-exercising, etc. It just stopped,
and for about 7 months I let it go.
After that, I went to the obgyn, got
examined, and nothign wrong was found. I
was prescribed the pill, and that restored
my period.
Ok here's the twist.
I then went on to get anorexia, and become
seriously underweight ( my lowest was 86
lbs) but still got my period, because I
was on the pill.
During treatment for an eating disorder
last feb, I discontinued taking the pill,
and my periods stopped, obviously.
Now, a year later, I am 16, 115 lbs and
very healthy, yet my period has not
returned. At the moment, i'm not
particularly sad about that, as its kindof
a nuisance, lol.
However, I am worried about the future.
I don't know if I will ever get my period
back, if I am infertile now. Someday I
would like to have children, and the
thought that I am not able to scares
me...
Does anyone have any thoughts, ideas,
suggestions?
Any similar experiences?
Thank you so much for any thoughts.

First off, I also have an eating disorder
and I am also getting treatment and
counseling. Seems to me that being a 5'7"
girl weighing only 115lbs you and I know
you are still a lil bit underweight. You
have at least 20 more lbs to go...Up ...At
135 you would be perfect looking and
really health! Mind you i've been 118
-115 already, and at the moment I am
127-132 (fluctuates due to water weight
and etc...) im only 5'3" though.
Here is what I think..., I had a very
similar experience, my parents got
divorced when I was only 10...And I went
through lots of stress.
I got my period at 11, 1/2 mind you.
That's how stressful my life was too!
About your period, something might be
wrong with your ovaries, because most
girls and women i've known had trouble
getting their period, all had cysts or
endometriosis, which makes it really
difficult. Specially if you want to have
kids someday.
My opinion when it comes to health in your
case would be, I think you are still a lil
underwegith, though I recognize that you
have gone really far with your recovery
already...And it's only the start of a
journey that hopefully will end soon with
a healthy, beautiful you! :)
if you are in any way underweight ...Your
body is starving and mal-nourished, that
makes it really hard for your body to work
properly and produce certain hormones, in
our case estrogen and progesterone.
Also being a lil underweight makes our
bodies starve so badly the fats, vitamins
and good acids we need to make our
digestive system work properly...So many
girls who have eating disorders like us,
suffer fom constipation, and amenorhea
(<-- lack of menstruation , period).
Therefore my advice to you would be, from
my own experience, I have never had
skipped periods yet, but constipation is
constant, and I am trying really hard to
keep a healthy diet, and take all of my
vitamins daily.
Calcium is very important...Vitamin d
also. It will strenghtenyour body.
I think that you should focus on taking
some supplements...As in vitamins (if you
already do that is great!!!) and trying to
eat a lil more, I suppose for your height
you are suppose to eat at least 1800
calories a day, between grains, fruit,
vegetables, meats and protein in general!
Mytips for you would be , try to have at
least 3 cups of milk a day, can be either
in ice cream or yogurt..Or just milk...No
skim milk...But...2 % maybe...! Some
oatmeal , beans, chicken....Fish...They
are all very good in protein and fiber.
:d
i like to snack on the new cheddar
flavored triscuits! :d they keep you
fuller longer..And you also get lots of
fiber.
Anyways...That's what I think could be
going on honey.
I would go and see my doctor...A different
one maybe than the one you have
now...Because it is always good to have a
2nd opinion.
Get yourself checked
again...And...Maintain a good healthy
diet..I am sure things will fall back into
place!!
Also...Try not to get stressed out too
often..That can mess up your period too!
Good luck to you hunny and god bless! :)

Thank you so much for replying. It means
a lot. :)
yes, I do think something is wrong, and im
working on gaining. Im eating about 2000
cals a day, taking calcium, multivitamins,
flax oil, and fiber supps. I eat a lot of
yogurt, cottage cheese, veggies, fruits,
nut butters, (yumness), etc. Etc. I am
a vegetarian.
My diet is pretty much on track.
I have made an appointment with an
endochrinologist, and hopefully I can get
some bloodwork done. Im in a bit of a
pickle though because I have issues with
doctors because of my history.
I can say im not stressed out too much, I
owe my mother so much, she has been there
through thick and thin, and has been
really understanding, and has let
me/continues to let me recover in my own
way. She basically put her own life on
hold for me. Im in awe.
Anyway, thank you again, and I wish you
the best of experiences in your new,
better life (i.E., after recovery. My
life, anyway, has been a billion times
better.) I would say good luck, but that
would sound like I think you need it. :)
stay strong. Continue to love and be
yourself. :)

Mom's are just amazing! They will do
anything when it comes to saving us from
danger!
I am so glad to hear that you are taking
very good care of yourself..And that you
eat all those good healthy things! :) I
know how hard it is to just be able to go
to the Dr. Before they start blaming our
eating disorder issues for every single
problem we have! It sucks!
I hope everything turns out ok with you
and I wish you the best too dear..And
thanks for your wishes..
Do not forget to update us (at least me)
on what is going on!
I am praying for you here!
Take care! :)

Tomorrow's my appointment!
Im a lil nervous, but ok basically. I am
kind-of expecting that my hormones are
imbalanced, or I just dont have enough for
a period (i get bloated and moody once a
month, so I think thats something), and so
im thinking they might just give me
hormone supps.
Ill let you all know
wish me luck, and that its not cancer :/
lol?

Ok, so my appointment results are, that
all my everything in my blood tests are
normal levels, basically. My estrogen is
a little low, and I
still might be a little underweight, for
me, and so the advice from the really nice
doctor was to "keep doing what im doing"
(.I.E., being healthy, eating healthy and
stuff)
and "maybe gain 5 pounds, because 5 pounds
can make the difference between a period
and no period."
however, they still want to keep my uterus
and all that jazz healthy and ok, so im on
.Yasmin again. Theyre thinking, have me
on it for, like, a year, then take me off
it and see if I have a period then.
There still might be some other things to
consider, because this docter I just saw
never got my old test records from my main
doctor, from when I first lost my period,
and something could be wrong there.
Its also possible that I have "completely
changed my body, im a new person" through
my eating disorder, which also makes
sense.
So..... As far as I know I dont have
cancer. Or anything like that.
Thanks everybody for caring and listening.
Ill let you know if anything else comes
up! :)
