Q: How soon before my Period can I take an Accurate Pregnancy T
asked by: DoctorQuestion on April 1st, 2006
I had unprotected sex almost 2 weeks ago and all of a sudden I have been feeling pregnancy symptoms. I started my period this morning (with more painful cramps than ever before) but I'm kind of worried that I could still be pregnant. The reason for this is because the other times I have been pregnant I have always had the first period.... in fact- I had my period for the first 3 months of my very first pregnancy. I took a pregnancy test last week and it came up negative. I guess my question is how soon could the tests be taken and accurately test? nPlease help. Thank you!

Getting Pregnant Answer A778
When discussing the menstrual cycle, it is imperative that you present data regarding your last menstrual date, cycle regularity/irregularity, and your cycle's duration (if it is regular). The pregnancy test you’ve taken is not valid because you performed it more than 5 days before your period was to arrive. Further, if you are experiencing actual menstruation, it is most likely that you are not pregnant. Nonetheless, if you take a pregnancy test and it shows up positive... then you are most likely pregnant and not experiencing menstruation (period) but, rather, vaginal spotting. The “periods” you’ve had during previous pregnancies (no matter how similar they appeared to real periods) were not actual periods (menstruations) but were probably spotting.
