Hi, I recently had a checkup at my local clinic. The nurse took my blood pressure and commented that it was pretty irregular. My blood pressure reading was 158/51 which, having looked on the internet quickly, seems high for the systolic reading and low for the diastolic reading. What does this combination of readings mean and is it indicative of any underlying problems? I had my blood pressure last checked when I had my wisdom teeth out a couple of months ago in hospital and my blood pressure was 135/73 then.

Thanks, matthew

Hi mg6782,
i have the same problem. I asked the same question on another thread and have gotten no response. My stomach doctor had prescribed me a high fiber diet for my colon 3 years ago. I did 200% of the daily recomended amount of fiber for 11 months and it made no improvements in my stomach/colon. What did happen in those 11 months was I gained 15 pounds ( it's very difficult to eat 25-50 grams of fiber a day and not exceed 2000 calories), my blood pressure went up to 135/88, and my cholesterol shot up from 120 to 200. It's been 18 months since I went off the high fiber diet and I lost the 15 pounds it caused me to gain. The problem is my blood pressure fluctuates from 90/27 to 119/50 and it normally runs around 109/44.

low diastolic
People who are very fit- athletes- sometimes have these BP numbers- Going below 50 diastolic is something that needs to be checked out- this is not good- may be a heart valve problem- or arrhthymia-You may have problems with dizziness- and could have syncopal episodes or fainting- dangerous if you lose any blood. check it out.

Athletic heart
Matt- The best thing to do is talk to your doctor about it.

But... You seem to be in a similar situation as I am. I am 21 with a resting BP 130/60 Pulse between ~56 and I generally respirate at 12 breaths/min. When I got EMT certified I learned that those vitals are pretty darn weird- most suggest a very healthy heart, but the high systolic pressure bothered me until I found out about the condition called athletic heart.

A "normal" BP is anywhere between 100/50 to 120/80. Any higher is "prehypertensive" and any higher than 130/90 is considered hypertension.

To avoid people like us being diagnosed with hypertension or being rushed to an emergency room because of a slow heart rate and whatnot, a diagnosis of athletic heart syndrome would be beneficial. I plan to make it in to my doc some time soon to maybe get an ECG run.
