Bulging Disc And Narrowing Disc??? Posted: 03-30-06 17:14pm
I just got my mri result and this is what
it says:
at the l2-l3 level, there is slight disc
space narrowing. There is a small
schmod's node producing slight indention
upon the anterior portion of the superior
endplate l3.
1. Mild disc marrowing and mild disc bulg
at the l2-l3 level
2. Minimal disc bulge at the l4-l5 level
what in the heck is narrowing of the
disc??? And what is schmod's node??
I know I hurt on the low right side of my
back& buttocks. When it is at it's
worst I have plain that goes down my right
leg.
If anyone could give me insight into this
I would be very gratful!!

schmorl's
nodes
schmorl's nodes are defined as herniations
of the intervertebral disc through the
vertebral end-plate.
schmorl's
node: an upward and downward
protrusion (pushing into) of a spinal
disk's soft tissue into the bony tissue of
the adjacent vertebrae (the bony building
blocks of the spine). Schmorl's nodes are
detectable with an x-ray test as a spine
abnormality .
Schmorl's nodes are most common in the
middle and lower spine.
Schmorl's nodes are common, especially
with minor degeneration of the aging
spine. Schmorl's nodes usually cause no
symptoms, but reflect that "wear and tear"
of the spine has occurred over time.
Schmorl's nodes are a helpful x-ray
finding as an indicator of degenerative
process that may be affecting a patient's
spine.
Could any of this that I called off to you
cause moderate to severe pain on right
lower back, butt and leg??? Thanks!!!

Disc Bulges And Other Disc Stuff With Leg Pain Posted: 03-31-06 11:59am
It is not what the mri said, but how did
it get there. These types of changes are
common with gait issues. Unfortunately,
everyone in healthcare usually
sectionalizes the body and throws
therapies after they give the condition a
word such as disc herniation, back strain,
etc. It is more appropriate to see how
the person walks, functions, and then take
a look at their gait and put the puzzle
together. This leads to more appropriate
treatment. You may benefit from foot
orthotics

Hi Fall Posted: 03-31-06 12:00pm
Hi fall ~
yes, it can. In fact that is how I was
prior to my lumbar surgeries. I have now
had a total of 4 lumbar surgeries. I am
now fused from l3-s1 with bak cages, rods
and screws and I am happy to say I am
doing very well. No, I am not pain free
but my pain levels are way down and the
numbness I had from my waist down has
returned for the most part.
As for surgeries I had 2 micro-d's, 1
anterior fusion with bakcages and 1
posterior fusion with rods and screws.
Please checkout the link I posted under my
name in the last post. I do have my
x-rays posted on the board.

Some Background Info! Posted: 03-31-06 12:13pm
My pcp sent me to a "back specialist" at
which time I told him what my doctors
nurse had told me over the phone...That I
had a bulging disk at l4-l5. He
immediatly set me up for spinal
injections. During and after the
injections I cried, couldn't sleep and
hurt severly...Much worse then before I
ever went to him. Then at a check up he
asked me why I was hurting on my right
side...My injections where on my left
side. I didn't understand untill I was
able to get to a mirror and realized he
had done the injections on my left side
and my problems are on my right side!!!
Then he finally asked me to get the mri
results...After reading them he had a
nurse tell me that I did not need the
injections because that is not what he
does for the things that I have.
1. He did a procedure without getting
my mri results
2. He did it on the wrong side
3. Then he says that I don't even need
those injections because that is not the
treatment for what I have!!!
I have a friend of mine who is an attorney
getting my records from him!!
Also ...Can the narrowing be just
narrowing of the disc and not degenertive
disk diseas???

If the space for the nerve root (foramen)
is already compromised because of
associated disc space collapse or bone
spurs (osteophytes), the added impingement
of the disc may irritate the nerve root
and cause a radiculopathy (arm pain). If
the foramen is not compromised, the
radiculopathy may be temporary.
Foment bag is useful to decrease
inflammation and help relieve the pressure
on the nerve root. Of cause cease the
pain at the same time.
Approximately 90% of disc herniations will
occur at l4- l5 (lumbar segments 4 and 5)
or l5- s1 (lumbar segment 5 and sacral
segment1), which causes pain in the l5
nerve or s1 nerve, respectively.
Foment bag help to restore proper function
and strength to the back. Foment bag
reduce inflammation to relieve the pain.
Foment bag promote circulation eliminate
bruises、strengthen spine and bone to
heal your back.

Hey fallruss,
i had a herniated disc at l5 8 years ago,
finding info on it all from a complete
novis point of view is hard. Have had
more problems recently due to narrowing of
the disc and the pain associated with it.
When the disc narrows there is more
pressure put on the nerves surrounding it
(pretty much the same when you have a
herniated disc) that causes pain to shoot
down the buttocks, legs and feet
(sciatica). I also have pain in my right
buttock and leg.... Sometimes in the left
too, although thats just when I sit too
long. Thats pretty much the lamens
example and I hope that you are more
informed after talking with your doctors
anyway. Sorry about your experience with
the doctor. No one should have to go
through that and I think that you are
justified in seeking council on the
matter. The sites that imshirl have given
you have helped me a lot in understanding
what I was facing........ Unfortunatly
your best defence in this case is
knowledge. Read up on it all as much as
you can. It feels very empowering to know
what your doctors talking about.
Good luck.
