Overweight With Gout
Posted: 03-29-06 19:40pm

Hi,
a few months ago I was diagnosed with the gout in my left foot and my doctor has me on allopurinol. I've been reading that baking soda helps alot with flare ups and with daily uses but complicates my condition because I have high blood pressure due to being overweight.
I was diagnosed with the gout when I went on a diet and started losing weight, apparently because the msu crystals were exposed. I've discontinued eating meat entirely and have stuck to a vegetarian diet but I still experience pain from the atacks. Is there something i'm doing wrong? Is baking soda a possibility for me to ease the pain? If gout sufferers are supposed to restrict protein from their diets then why do some dieticians suggest eating milk products, legumes, and nuts?
Sorry for playing 20 questions but i'm really lost right now and could use the suggestions of others in my predicament. Thanks-jeff

I have the following fyi:

1) you need some medicine to treat the pain and inflammation from gout attacks. You didn't mention you are taking any. See "emergency gout treatments" in http://www.Icuredmygout.Org for more info.

2) due to its possible side effects, allopurinol is not recommended until a person has 2~3 gout attacks.

3) initiation of allopurinol can worsen gout attacks and should not be initiated until 1~2 months after the gout attacks have subsided, preferably with prophylactic use of colchicine, an nsaid, etc.

4) rapid weight loss is known to trigger gout. It's safe if you lose 0.5~1 pound per week.

5) "... A rigid purine restricted diet is of dubious therapeutic value and can rarely be sustained for long", so says a gout expert, professor a. G. Fam in "gout, diet, and the insulin resistance syndrome" at http://www.Jrh eum.Com/subscribers/02/07/1350.Html . (if the link doesn't work, change "...Html" in the address box of your browser to "html".

6) do not use baking soda if you are hypertensive.

7) I suggest that you see a rheumatology for your gout.

Take care.
