Q: Is it possible to get pregnant if I am still underweight and
asked by: DoctorQuestion on March 29th, 2006
fter going off the Birth Control Pill (was on it for 3 years) over 2 months ago, I have yet to have my period. I then went to the doctor and I was put on 10 mg of Provera once a day for 10 days...however that was 20 days ago and nothing has happened--I still have yet to get my period. I had bloodwork done and everything checked out. I was a bit underweight before and am slowly gaining weight as I do want to get pregnant. We have also not been using any birth control/contraceptives. But it doesn't seem that I would be able to become pregnant as being underweight and not getting my period (I did a pregnancy test several times a couple of weeks ago and don't have any symptoms) Is it possible to get pregnant if I am still underweight and not getting my period? Why wouldn't the Provera work?
I have another appointment with my doctor but it isn't until early May...so I am concerned and worried.

One of the expected side effects of oral contraception (birth control pills) is temporary loss of ovulation and menstruation after coming off the pill. Menstruation might be present... but without ovulation, periods can be irregular. Without ovulation, conception is impossible and has no connection with being under weight. The time period without ovulation/menstruation varies across women. Most women establish ovulation and regular menstruation after 6 months (this can last up to 2 years). Provera is an oral contraceptive and can’t induce ovulation directly. It seems that your doctor’s intention was to provoke menstruation that might induce a normal cycle to start. I think that 2 months is not a long enough period; you can wait for a while until can be used.
