I have been troubled for 13 years with
this. I had been to many docs with no
success. While doing some internet
research on it I came up with a thing
called "Leaky Gut". It would seem that our
diets, coffee and booze is killing us. Add
to that antibiotics, aspirin ibeprophen
etc., that we so often take, our
intestines are becoming porous and unable
to breakdown and absorb proper nutrients.
My heart palipitations started after a
lenghty illness, treated by, guess what,
antibiotics!
I did most of what was suggested by the
article on Leaky Gut, cut out coffee, cut
out booze, took some enzmes, good yogurt
and cleaned up my diet, ie., virtually no
processed food and lots of veges and
fruit, mostly berries. (I believe the food
industry is trying to kill us, but don't
get me started on that).
I have been on this regime about 6 months
with good results. I started having a
couple of beer a day, no binges, and it
seems that my palipitations are coming
back. I may have to quit the beer also,
which really sucks, as it is so enjoyable
for me!

I'm 29 and I'm having the skipped beat
feelings also. I smoked off and on for
several years, but quit 3 years ago. I do
have high blood pressure as well and was
recently switched from Dyazide to
Lisinopril, which I noticed this got
frequent when I changed the medicine. I
just wonder if I can switch to something
else that wouldn't do this. It scares me.
I do have an appointment with a
cardiologist on the 13th of August, so I'm
a little nervous over that. Hopefully I
won't have anything wrong.

Heart Palpatations Posted: 08-07-07 07:35am
Hi, I'm new to this site and have read of
your concerns about palpatations. I'm no
doctor, but have CHF and had massive heart
attack nearly 5 yrs. ago. I also have a
defib. It wasn't until after my surgery
and a 3 wk. stay in the hospital that I
was told I needed to see an
Endochrinologist (thyroid dr). No one
ever said anything to me about the
importance of your thyroid in relation to
your heart. After being tested and put on
a regimen of meds., my palpations lessened
significantly. It's just a
thought....make sure you have your thyroid
tested. A dysfunctional thyroid can lead
to heart attacks. Good Luck!

Missed Beat Posted: 08-07-07 19:59pm
I feel your pain. I have had the skip a
beat thing for a while but this week had a
couple of really bad days so I'm back to
the specialist this afternoon. I was told
by one doctor that it's actually an extra
beat but sure feels like a missed beat to
me followed by the big bang after each one
to compensate.
I wish I had found this site a long time a
go as there is definitley a sense of
relief knowing that others are suffering
(and surviving) the same thing. If the
specialist gives me anything that might
help any of you I'll be back on here
tonight to let you know.
All the best and don't let this thing
"BEAT" you.

Palpitations Posted: 08-10-07 10:08am
Hi....I know this has been said, but thank
god I found this place. A month ago I was
sitting in our truck going to a camping
trip and I felt my heart beating in my
throat then my arms got tingly then my
face. It last maybe 30 sec but I felt off
most of the day. Didn't happen again for
10 days. Ended up in ER they said I was
anemic, kept me overnight, wanted to run
more tests, CT of lungs showed no blood
clot. They think it is anemia but I also
have Rheumatoid Arthritis and am NOT being
treated at the moment, my insurance
woudln't pay for all the expensive meds so
was just going the asprin route. We have
new insurance and I see doc next week.
Well I had the palps again Sunday night
really bad, arms go numbish, face flushes
feels hot and tight. Last 15 hours. Saw
doc 2 days later, the still is testing me
for Thyroid, Anemia....Poo pooed the Peri
Menopause thought. I have been having
skipped beats all week and feel flush and
weird afterwards.
I am getting a Stress/echo at the end of
the month. My kids are scared to death
Any thoughts??

Abnormal Beats Posted: 08-17-07 00:29am
I am a 26/m from Panama City Beach,
Florida who has been experiencing
palpatations for the past 3 years. I have
had a fourteen year drug history and have
smoked and drank for that period also. I
started having anxiety attacks sometime
last year too. I recently went to a
cardiologist to get tests done on my
palpatations and was told that my tests
came back normal. I also went to the
emergency room because it seemed like
every other beat was a weird one. To
describe the beats it feels like my heart
is rolling over and at times feels like a
drum is playing inside me. It gets so
strong that I can feel it in my throat and
sometimes makes my arm hurt. What sucks
for me is hearing the doctors say"there is
nothing wrong with you" and "try not to
think about it". My question to them and
to you all is how am I not suppose to
think about my heart doing cartwheels
every five seconds? Do any of you guys
know how to take your mind off of your
crazy heartbeat?
I do know that limiting your caffeine
and cutting back, if not quitting all
together the smoking habit, would help out
a lot. And a good cardio excersice daily
seems to help too. But how am I not
suppose to think about something that
feels like it is gonna make my heart burst
or give me a heart attack? All i know is
for 23 years of my life I never
experienced one irregular heartbeat then
out of the blue they started happening all
the time. Does anyone know why all of the
sudden they started? A good referral to a
medicine would be nice too, even though I
kinda am against medication, unless it
will make this stop

Missing Beats Posted: 09-02-07 20:13pm
I found the postings informative, and
helped me relax until I could talk to a
med. prof.
I am 66 yrs. old. My last ekg was perfect
and my last stress test I did fantastic,
beating my triathlete husband (who is
younger). My family history is pretty
strong in the heart dept. My missed
beats started just recently during our
heat spell, working outside in the garden
when it was 103 degrees. I listened to my
heartbeat on my old stethoscope, and sure
enough, about every sixth beat and then
this 'rush' of blood, giving the sensation
of lightheadedness. I do, however, know
what the cause may be. I am not a great
drinker, and certain alcoholic beverages
seem to bring this on, for instance, pear
cider and asti spamati, both have
flavorings etc. Some kaluah's do the
same. If I really want to bring it on I
get in the hot tub for a few minutes and
have a small shot of kaluah, and there
they are. Maybe my experience will help,
as we are all in this together! Sante'

Diddo to all you have all said. I have
had through my life a once in a six-month
and no more extra throat thumps of my
heart. 2 years ago, I did the whole body
scan, just to see. My heart (I am 52), I
was told by the operator, had a calcium
level of absolute zero, none detectable
anywhere. I am not over weight, nor have
any medical issues, and don't typically
drink coffee, booze, or smoke, etc.
Then one day, I thought I was going to
die. Every 5th beat, a pre ignition beat,
then a make-up beat. After a day of this,
I went to a cardio, he did every test,
echo, stress, EKG, found that when I ran
fast, there were no extra beats. He
promised me that based on the scan, tests,
etc, I wasn't going to die.
It still bothered me, because I don't have
a lot of stress, and don't do all the bad
things, eat healthy, work at home, etc. I
wanted to know what the hell was going on
and why now.
So it went down for a while, and just went
up again. I went to see him today and
said that I just can't deal with it. I
want to either find the problem or treat
it.
I took my first pill of Toprol XL tonight,
25 mg.
I will give a day by day. Stay tuned.

Toprol Xl First Night Posted: 09-11-07 22:21pm
I took 25 mg right before bed, and (some
say it takes a few days) it seemed like my
heart settled down nicely. It was like
that all through the day, until about 3PM
when it appeared to wear off.
Tonight I took one after dinner, and it
seems like nothing has happened.
I'll keep it up and see. If last night
was any indication, it was like going back
10 years. No side effects either.
If it takes a few day, then maybe I need
Xanax instead... Last night may have been
in my head.

5th Day On Toprol Xl Posted: 09-14-07 21:18pm
Well, this is the end of this crap. My
palps are worse, chest pains, I sleep
well, but at night, right before I take it
again, I start feeling like a failure. At
noon, I fall asleep. I have contacted my
cariologist and will have him get me off
of this. You can't stop suddenly. Back
to the drawing board.

im strangely only 16, and i was
just working at school and had a flutter
within my heart. As im only young i was
worried, and friends close to me have died
because of heart problems at my age. I
went to the gp just for a general check up
however, i wasnt convinced that a heart
beat through a periscope would do the job.
Ive also had a few more flutters, but im
happpy with the advice about the low
calcium in my diet, or the amount of
stress im going through because of exams
thank you for all
ur advice, xx im happy now

hi everyone!!
It's been awhile since i've wrote about my
problems.. I have been dealing with this
thud in my chest, and skipping beats since
about 3yrs ago. I'm guessing it has to do
with caffeine.. And of course smoking.
ive never been to the dr about this, and
when i was younger i had really bad
anxeity disorder, and i know how to calm
myself down if i'm having one, but i can't
seem to fix my heart problem.. It scart me
so bad one time, it gave me a serious
anxeity attack.. I almost went to the
hospital, but i didn't. What kind of
vitamins does anyone recommend to take.

Occational miss beat!! Posted: 02-02-08 14:10pm
Hello everyone!!
My name is Nathan and I'm a personal
trainer but i'm different to most as i'm
into the Health side more than i'm into
Fitness. Like a lot of you i experience
some of the symptoms of palpatation and
miss beats. I have had checks( ecg and a
blood test). I have recently have had no
problem what so ever. I have basically
been drinking minimum 2 ltr of water a
day. drinking no caffeine and no alcohol,
no sweets or chocolate also been eatting
as best as possible. For example- Big
breakfast, good lunch (Jacket potatoes,
pasta, tuna fish, baked beans, nuts and
pulses' etc). Cut out pastry based food.
My dinner is more than likely to be the
smallest meal of the day.
What i did find is when i do have these
problem, it occurs when the whether is
cold.
Hi everyone-- I feel for everyone with
these missed heart beats. I have a lot of
information for you and some remedies. In
todays world I don't think the doctors
care to much as long as their getting
their money for your visit, or they've had
them themselves-- you've got to do your
own research. Look out for #1.
I had these missed heartbeats for about
10 years and the symtoms are all
the same-- you feel like your missing a
beat and a thump in your chest and also
you may feel a little light headed-- I'm
sure you'll agree. You also won't likely
feel these missed beats when your
walking-- I'll tell you why.
I've read about 3 books on the heart now
and I wanted to understand this to help
myself. I couldn't stand these missed
beats and it didn't seem to matter to any
of these doctors. They all
do what they can but they really don't
know why they happen-- at least most of
them don't. The best book you can read is
the heart ecyclopedia and it's written by
Gabrielle Khan and he's a professor
of cardiology at the university of Ottawa
in Canada-- I found it very informative.
My missed heartbeats went away for
the last 3 years and they just have come
back. I think it's from stress and anxiety
right now as I have a lot to do for the
upcoming year and I think that's affecting
me-- I believe I'll get rid of them again.
I'll give it to you straight.
Firstly the biggest contributor to my
missed heart beats was caffeine- for sure
I drank diet pepsi and coffee all day.
About 3 cups of coffee and lots of diet
pepsi-- both contain caffeine. I stopped
drinking caffeine totally and they went
away. I use to have these missed beats
so bad that I'd have a little diet pepsi
with a meal and they would come on. If I
had other stresses to add on to that they
would feel like thunder in my chest- very
hard thumps -- quite scary.
Now-- why is this happening?? answer
thru my research I found out that caffeine
and stress both stimulate the adrenal
glands and the sympathetic nervous system.
When the sympathetic nervous system is
stimulated it releases
adrenaline-- usually to help you-- example
somebody wants to fight or attack you--
your system will release adrenaline to
make your heart pump more forcefully to
pump blood to your muscles so you can
fight or run-- natures way of a defence
system for you.
If your drinking to much coffee and you
also have a stessful life your system is
going to be producing more adrenaline than
it needs. What this does is it affects
the "sinus node" which is a highly
specialized and sensitive set of cells
that
conduct the electrical stimulous that your
heart requires to beat rythmically. The
sinus node is located in the upper right
atrium of the heart. The heart has 4
chambers- 2 upper atriums and 2 lower
ventricles. The lower left venticle is
the
main pumping chamber of the heart and
it's rersponsible for pumping out
reoxygenated blood to the body.
What this extra adrenaline does is
interferes with the sinus node and causes
interference with the rythmic electical
shocks that make the heart beat
rythmically. To prove this to yourself you
can do this and get rid of your missed
beats very easy--only temporarily and
I'll
tell you how. This would apply to people
with healthy hearts only -- after you've
been told your heart checks out
medically.
As I said above the problem is an over
stimulated sympathetic nervous system
producing to much adrenaline-- medical
books refer to it as epinephrine or nora
drenaline-- all the same thing.
Here's how to get rid of them for about
3 hours in about 3-5 minutes-- it works
great for me but I really don't like to do
it
but it's a lot better than the missed
beats.
Take 5 mg's of valium or you may only
need 2.5 mg's and at the same time
tale one ounce of vodca with a 50% alcohol
contant-- 40% is OK in a rum or something
and your missed heart beats will go away--
for sure!!!-- why is this???
Because alcohol is a deppressant of the
nervous systen and the valium is to sedate
or calm down the nervous sytem.
If you do this you will see that I'm
right. I've been taking valium for anxiety
for 10 years and since then I've never had
a panic attach either-- it's a graet safe
drug and it's cheap. It does not affect
your sex drive and it doers not affect
your thinking and make you feel like a
zombie.( like a lot of anti-deppresants)
The doctors don't like to prescribe it--
why???-- because the pharmaceutical
companies have told them it's bad and
addictive so they can sell there expensive
anti-deppressant drugs like
Zoloft and Paxil-- to name a few, I think
those anti deppressants make you feel
wierd and that their dangerous for some
people. The people that have these missed
beats like I do are likely high strung
people or have too much stress in their
life and their system is going thru
a hormone imbalance-- much like a diabetic
when the pancreas has to deal with an
overload of sugars to break down
eventually something going to give and
you will soon be a diabetic-- look at all
the young people that are-- bad diets to
high in sugars.
The last thing I'd recommend is a beta
blocker called metoprolol-- its pretty
strong and it blocks adrenaline going to
the heart-- there are others as well and
they all end in-- ol-- Persoanally I don't
like them because they affect your sex
drive and I'll only take them the odd
time
when my missed beats are bad.
I should add that they are not really
"missed" beats but what they are is 2
beats happening almost simultaneously and
not in proper rythym making them feel like
a missed beat-as
an endochronologist explained to me.
i HOPE THIS HELPED SOME OF YOU.
Bye the way--I don't really buy into the
thinking that alcohol causes the mised
beats--probably the caffeine in the mix--
like coke or pepsi-- some people's systems
can't handle caffeine-I'm one!!
GOOD LUCK!!!

about palpitations Posted: 02-03-08 15:18pm
18mths ago I had a sudden onset of rapid
heart beat, I was in hospital wired up all
day, to my reliief it stopped as suddenly
as it started but I was give medication
which Im still taking. A few weeks after
I went to private heart surgeon in Harley
St I was that worried, Im not well off but
somehow I raked up the money to put my
mind at rest. Ater extensive tests the
specialist said the results were good and
I had nothing to worry about. For the
last year or more I have been having
palpitations and odd feelings and am
unable to get on with my life, sometimes
it keeps me awake, I feel like its
anxiety, or worry its the medication Im
taking.

Listen guys,
Not sure bc not a dr., but after deciding
to see if my caffeine in coffee was the
culprit for my palpatations, I stopped
drinking it. I also drank silver needle
tea. I don't have any symptoms of
palpatations anymore. It stopped right
away. I also worried because I do cross
trainer and my heart rate was like 52 or
63 at the end of my workout. Some say it
is connected to chronic fatigue syndrome,
but if I eat less and stay away from
coffee and sweet things I feel soo much
better. But, after going to my dr one dr.
a cardiologist and one dr. internist who
thought it might be my premarin. She the
internist just looked at me and said, "I
have no clue what it could be." So,
hopefully I have discovered it myself and
until other symptoms come up I will just
not eat as much, eliminate sugar and
caffeine and see how I feel. If there are
any dr. out there let me know...and by the
way does anyone know about a symptom of
cfs being long toes and fingers. The
report about caffeine and if you are
allergic to it is scary as it can cause
many horrible things such as anxiety,
dementia, and poisoning of brain
cells...and more.
If there is a dr in the house please
respond to me.

I'm not a Doc but when I had them.. I gave
up caffine, and they stopped.. I also
found I would have them the day after
having a few drinks the night before.. and
still do.
So you can find out what triggers them and
control them. I have.

Hello it's Nathan the Personal trainer
again, I forgot to mention about Heart
Math which is a very good way of balancing
both types of autonomic nerver system.
Autonomic nerves -
1 calms you down (Para sympathetic
nerves)and 1 makes you fight or flight
(sympathetic nerves).
The technique is to breath in slowly for 5
seconds and breath out for 5 seconds. If
you do this for 1 min, four times a day.
You will feel massive improvements as your
body will become gradually more balanced.
Give it a few week and emails your
camments as that would be great for
feedback
By the way i have now got the cayenne
pepper supplement and co enzyme q10. Will
give you feedback!!

Palpitations Posted: 03-02-08 08:33am
Hi, I was searching the internet this
morning trying to find some info on
missing heart beat, palpitations etc when
I stumbled across this website. After
following various leads on the net, I
discovered "Cayenne Pepper" - apparently
very good for heart conditions. So I
thought I would give it a go - pretty
disgusting stuff to drink - half a
teaspoon in a very large glass of warm
water - but hey presto, you know what -
the heart has steadied up and the
palpitations stopped! I was so amazed I
thought I had better contact this website
and tell you about it as so many people
seem to be suffering like I was.
Apparently Cayenne tincture is the way to
go, so I have ordered some from Neal's
Yard, but until then, it is cayenne pepper
and warm water 3 times a day!
Hope this will help some of you.
Sally
