Q: Post Abotion Help/advise

I had an abotion ( 23 wks please don't judge I have a hard enough time with it) about 2 months ago. I bled for about 2 wks and spotting for 1 wk and finally after about the 5th wk I finally started my period, or so I thought because it was only mild spotting for 3 days. My first question is.... Is that normal? My second question comes after a brief explanation. Since then hubby and I have had protected sex ( condoms), exept for the last time ( we were out). Today he called me from work complaining about waht sounds like it may be a uti. Looked on webmd and checked out the symptoms and seemed about right until I started to think that it may be an infection I have and passed to him. Thats when I found that some of the symptoms I have might be caused by pid (pelvic inflammatory disease), lower bacache, pain during intercouse, weakness and irregular bleeding. My question is, and I quess its 2 by now is.... Is this someting that can happen after an invasive abortion? And. Could my hubby have gotten an infection from me?

I'm really looking for some advise here I don't want to go back to the clinic again if I don't have to.

Unfortunatel yes, I too feel that yo at least need to return to either the clinic or go to a hopital and get yourself checked ou as well as your husband.

Did you keep your follow up appointment after the abortion?

If you didn't for any reason, you need to see a doctor as soon as possible. The follow up appointment is crucial in ensuring that all of the tissue is gone and will not cause an infection.

Having said that, however, complications from an abortion happen only very rarely. But, since you did have a later abortion (23) weeks, you would have been at a greater risk for complications. Keeping the follow up appointment and following the instructions that were given to you are crucial to reducing your risk and keeping you healthy.

As for the spotting, each woman's body is different and so we cannot really tell you whether your situation is "normal". However, your doctor is better qualified to give you advice on this matter so you really should see him/her as soon as possible.

You do need to attend your follow up, regardless of gestation and it's important to seek medical advice if you are at all concerned.
As has already been said, there is no "normal" for spotting following a termination - for some women it lasts days, others a few months. The only time to be concerned about the bleeding is if it's excessively heavy (soaking a pad within an hour is what I was told afterwards) or when it lasts for an excessive amount of time (again, I was told after 10weeks it should have stopped).

As for the sex. You are advised to abstain completely in the two weeks following. If you do have an infection then it would depend entirely what it was on the question of whether you could have passed it too your husband. Certain things which are common after an abortion (such as bacterial vaginosis) are not sexually transmitted (although need to be treated as they can cause pid if left untreated) but the chances are that you would be very aware of having something like this (i had it after my mirena insertion and there is a very noticable pain amongst other things).

Try to relax, post abortion complications are rare (whichever procedure is used) but you do need to see a doctor to rule out the possibilities of infections. Call the clinic or your local doctor and make an appointment, it may be scary at the time but you will feel better in the long run

I have to thank you for your input. I did not go for my follow up appointment, and i'm regreting it now. But, and I know its no excuse, it was very tramatic and I felt fine at the time. Plus I never wanted to see that place agaun. But...... I did make an appointment for sat. And hubby is feeling better with lots of extra water and cranberry juice :)

i am having alot of anxiety about going back but I will. I will post my results if anyone is intersted. Er

It's okay to be paranoid every once in a while, especially since this is new territory for you.... I personally see nothing wrong with you having an aboriton at 23 weeks, and want you to know that I wish you all the best! It was your right, and your choice, don't let anyone get you down.
