Q: Small Bald Spot

A small bald spot (about the size of a quarter) has appeared on the back/rightside of my husband's head. He has thick, dark hair so this is quite noticable. The hair in that area is completely gone showing shiny scalp as if a chunk of hair has fallen out. Anyone had this before? Do you think it is a symptom of some more serious medical problem?
