A more serious problem than unpleasant odors from the anus is loss of control of fecal continence. In this case, experts such as abdominal surgeons and neurologists would be required. But, as I understand from your letter you don’t have problem in controlling the defecation but controlling the expulsion of gases (flatulention). There isn’t another way to control gases except to “contract” your anal muscles as long as you can in occasions where releasing gases would be unpleasant or embarrassing (a lot of people in closed room). There is nothing ill in releasing gases in other situations. Production and smell of anal gases depends mainly from your eating habits and the type of food you prefer. You might then try changing your diet and see what effect it has on flatulence. Fiber supplements like psyllium husks or a diet high in fiber (whole fruits, vegetables, and grains) can also help eliminate matter caught in the intestinal tract. Finally, you can begin to wash your anal opening after defecation instead of using tissue paper.
