I was wondering if there has been any
new developments in ankle arthritis
surgery to relieve pain other than just
making the bones unmovable ? Has there
been any new in roads on the way to the
ankle replacement surgery yet ? How
about other types of ankle surgery that I
have missed, can someone help me please.
Thanks. Ric

Hi ric,
i have osteo in my ankle (amongst other
places). Just this week I did a search
on ankle arthritis on the web...Just to
find out what my options are. Well, i'm
sorry to say that I did not come up with
much. Joint replacement surgery in the
ankle is not as advanced as in the hip or
knee. They can do it, but the results
are not as gaurenteed. The replacement
pieces that I saw look alot like the knee
replacement pieces, and are
metal-on-metal. They can also go in
there with a laporoscope (just 2 or 3
small incisions) and shave off any burrs
or bone matter that is getting in the way.
Of course there is a cortisone shot for
temporary inflamation relief. And there
is one other procedure, though I don't
remember the name, where they can inject
some substance into your joint to aid in
lubrication...But of course it is only
temporary.
I would just start surfing and reading if
I were you. The bone fusion doesn't
sound any fun...And can lead to other
complications down the road with the rest
of the foot. For me, right now, I am
just trying not to stress that joint out
any more than necessary, and taking
glucosamine. The more years that I can
buy before I really have to address this
issue, the better. Besides, if I wait
long enough, the technology just might
improve!!
Hope this helps,
barbara
