Q: Bone Described As Soft And Spongy

My husband underwent surgery. A piece of rib was removed. The bone was described as being soft and spongy. He was diagnosed with prostrate cancer and doctors are checking for secondary bone cancer. What does it mean if the bone removed is described as being soft and spongy?
