Q: About to Have An Idet Procedure... Anyone With Experience??

I am being scheduled to have an idet procedure done on l4-l5 and l5-si disks. I was wondering if anybody out there has had this procedure done. In case it goes by other names, this is the internal cauterization of
the herniated disk walls.

- I was wondering how much pain there is afterwards.
- how much activity can you do after.
- how long the recovery time is.
- how successful was the procedure.

Also, if there is anything else I didn't think to ask, please feel free to volunteer information.
Any information would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks imshirl.
I do appreciate the links and information. But what I am really looking for is personal experiences to give me an idea of what to expect in the recovery phase.
I want to know how much pain we're talking about afterwards, what my amount of mobility and activity will be, etc.

I recently had discography done to assess the damaged disks. The procedure wasn't too bad. But the aftermath hurt like h*ll. I would still do it again in a heartbeat to know what i'm dealing with, but I wish I had known going into it that my back would be spasming for almost a week after.

So if anyone has had idet done, please let me know what I am in for during the recovery.
Thanks all!

Sorry I Wasn't Any Help
Hi nevets ~

I didn't have the idet done because my ns said it doesn't have a very good success rate. I also had several discograms done on both cervical and lumbar and unlike you I didn't have pain for a week after. I had pain of 10 at some levels but because of the tears in my disc's by the time I got over to another building for my ct scan the dye had leaked out and my 10 pain was gone. Like you I would do it again because for me it proved my disc's were my pain generators. I am now fused from c3-7 and l3-s1 and I am doing very well. Nope, not pain free but much better.

I am sure the same would go for the idet that each person is different and the recovery after will be different as well. You may not get many replies here you might want to try some other support board where the board is active. Sorry I am not any help on this one but if you want other links besides spine and beyond let me know and I will post some for you?

I had the IDET L4/5 done in 2007 @ the Cleveland Clinic. You will probably be told not to drive for 10 days and to wear a lightweight back brace for a few months. The pain from the procedure is minimal and I did get some relief for about 3-4 months. As of 07/30/09 I am trying to find someone locally to do another back surgery instead of the morphine pump that several others have said is my only option due to excessive scar tissue from a previous surgery.

I hope this helps.
