Q: Advise On What to Do Next?

I was in automobile accident about 2 years ago. I was a front seat passenger and we hit a tree head on about 35mph. The next day I started experiencing back pain in the mid/upper back between my shoulders. I went to the doctor, he x-rayed my spine and said nothing was wrong, gave me some pain medication and that was it. At the recommendation of a friend I have been going to a chiropractor for about a year. I gave her my x-rays and she said she could see where my spine had twisted (or something like that I can't remember the term) the manipulations give me some immediate releif but it always comes back a couple weeks later and gets very painful at times. Does anyone have any advise on what to do next? I'm 27, very active, and although it probably won't, I just want do whatever I can to make the pain stop. I have thought about going to a different doctor or a specialist but I don't want them to just give me painkillers and send me on my way. Any advice on where to go or what to do would be greatly appreiciated.
Thanks, jake

Hi there!

I would recommend you visit your gp (dr) and ask to be referred to a pain management specialist.

I have been in pain for many months, did the chiropractor thing which helped mildly but not in the long term.

May be see a physiotherapist?

Take care, and an answer is out there, you just have to keep persevering!

Thanks for the reply, I guess the only way to get better is to go see another doctor. I have to pay a % of the visit my insurace doesen't cover so i'm just trying to find the right Dr. In my area so it won't be another waste of money. I know if I don't go I will never get better. Has anyone else had and injury like this? If so how did the Dr. Or how is it usually treated?

Jake,

you probably need a more thorough work up of imaging studies. The plain x-ray isn't very helpful when it comes to soft tissue damage. You could have some disc issues or muscle problems. The next step to me anyway is to get an mri or a ct scan. The mri would be better dealing with soft tissue injuries.

Good luck

Hello
i have had the xray, ct scan and mri scan the mri scan is the better one - I pretty much wasted money or the xrays and ct but you just dont know what to do or which is the best! At the end I did everything!! I saw a neurosurgeon, a rehab doc, a rehab physio, a normal physio, 2 chrios, a gp, a chinese doc, and a spine specialist.
It wasnt until I got the referal to see the nureosurgeon that things started to get better. The best thing that happened to me was the doctor that I saw rang up the neurosurgeon and got me an appointment 2 days later. I live in australia and noramlly to see a surgeon you would have to wait about 2 months.
I can really sympathise with you jake, I am 24 and not being active and healthy really gets you down! After months of pain I am all better and have just returned to the gym and started swimming again. Let me know what you decide and how you go!
Catherine
