Q: When do Women Re-Establish Ovulation after Coming off the Pi
asked by: DoctorQuestion on March 21st, 2006
I just went off of the pill two months ago and had been taking the pill for about a year and a half. I just got my period last month and my husband and I are trying to conceive. I have irregular periods and also heard that when you go off of the pill you don't necessarily ovulate right away. Is it possible that I'm back on track that soon after going off of the pill? Also, is the basal temperature thing the only way to know when you've ovulated?

It is true that there is a temporary lack of ovulation after coming off birth control pills. 99% of women who stop taking oral contraception establish their ovulations in the first 6 months after coming off the pill. The duration it takes for ovulation to be re-established is strongly individual... but most women usually need 2-3 months to recover their fertilization cycle. Ovulation can be predicted using ovulation tests or measuring basal temperature.
