Hello i'm currently using ortho tri-cyclen lo but I wanted to use those minera iud's because they are more effective in preventing pregnancy..I am just kinda scared because i'm young...Just turning 18 in a month and I haven't been pregnant and had a baby...I'm in a monogamous relationship so std is not a big prob...I just heard that it can cause infertility if complication occurs..I'm kinda scared though. Can somebody inform me more about this?

hi haliparot,
i also have an iud (mirena) and I am 21 years old. I have it for 2 years now so I was about your age when I got it. I have to say I understand that your afraid of the iud because problems like that could happen. But then again the pil could do the same damage. The chances that this will happen to you is small. But then again I am not a docter. I will tell you a little bit about my experience with the mirena. The first year everything was great, no period, no worrying about anything. But I have been having some minor problems the last year like: bad cramps in my stomach. I have done a little more reading about this also on the forum but this seems to happen more often. Just like every birth control can have it's problems. I just think you should just give it a try and wait and see. I f you don't feel good about it you can always have it removed again. I think every woman has to find a birth control that fits them the best. So what I would do is just read into it a bit more and talk to your docter about it. Good luck

How can you possibly be blasé about abortion. What did those unborn babies ever do to you? The answer is nothing. They didnt ask to be conceived you chose to have intercourse that lead to life being created. If you are big enough to have sex then you should be big enough to accept the fact that you may get pregnant. I think it is disgusting that people abort their babies just because it was an "accident" it is not an accident, you meant to have sex therefore how is it accidental??? It isnt.

siobhan, this is not called for. This person is looking for birth control assistance on a birth control board. Please don't come back here and say anything derogatory again. She didn't say anything about abortion.

I must say that I wasnt commenting on the girl wanting to use birth control I was commenting on the comment afterward. About the pro-life "crap" it isnt crap, its peoples belief that unborn babies should have the same right to life as every other human being. Dont be so imature. It is my right to post my belief on the subject it isnt crap. Grow up!!

there's no reason to believe that complications will arise when you use it if you are relatively healthy to begin with. As long as you listen to your doctor or the nurse about checking to make sure it's in place, you should be just fine. And no, as cari has said, iud's do not make you infertile. I wish I had done more research when I was 18 and I would have had an iud as well. As such, i'm already too close to the time when my husband and I have discussed the possibility of a child to get one now. Perhaps afterward. I think that every young .Woman who wants one should be able to get them since they are long-term birth control. Best of luck!
Peace,
jenn

first of all, cairfairy was commenting on the issue of pro-lifers not even believing in the use of birth control - which women take so the won't get pregnant, so they won't need to have an abortion. So, if someone gets pregnant when they are on birth control, then yes, it was an accident.
Second, I hope you never give advice to women on the topic of sex, birth control, or options in the event of an unwanted pregnancy, because you are obviously very one-sided on this issue. Women need to know the truth about all of these topics - not the beliefs of narrow-minded individuals or groups (and that goes for pro-lifers and pro-choicers).

As for a reply to the actual topic, I have recently started doing research about the iud as well. My fiance does not like the nuvaring and I would love to have a birth control that I never have to think about. I don't plan on having a child for several more years (i am 22, I would like to have one by the time I am 30).
However, the website said that it is safe for women who have given birth already. But I think it was carifairy who said they recently approved it for women who have not given birth - could anyone verify this? The website also said the risk of the iud falling out is higher if you have not given birth - if the approval is true, does that mean that the risk is no higher?

I've had the mirena iud for 4 years now, and while it's been terrific not having any periods, and being able to be active and monogamous without ever having to think about birth control, I have in the last year gained 15 pounds that I cannot lose. I've gotten thicker and all the healthy living and excercise in the world doesn't help. I actually joined this website so that I could ask about the hormone levonorgestrel that's been released into my body for the last 4 years, i', worried that this might be the cause of my body change. I don't have any answers yet, but i'm to the point where i've ruled out pretty much everything else, and want to make sure that this hormone isn't causing my inability to lose this weight. I just think that when we start messing with hormones, we need to be really open with our ob/gyns, and each other.

Healthy living wont cut it, you need to be eating 2,000 calories or less depending on your exercise. Exercise should be 45 minutes to an hour everyday.

I eat about 1600-1700 calories a day, and exercise for an hour a day to keep my weight in check.

Iud's are perfectly safe for nulliparous women, other countries have been inserting them in women who have not given birth for years and years. You know the us is last of all to get the newest kind of techniques and such.

I'm at 1500 calories a day, I work out plenty, I drink lots of water, I take vitamins and supplements. And still my upper body is thicker, and even though i'm fairly firm, i'm still heavy and two sizes larger than I was 4 years ago. I think the iud is a wonderful option, but let's face it, the hormones being emitted might affect a small number of us differently. Not to mention the fact that i'm older, and might be perimenupausal, which could, combined with the added hormone, affect me differently. I'm not knocking it, I just want to know if I might be the "added weight gain" exception.

I have the same symptons as "freemom". I also have gained 15 pounds and my shoulder got really broad. I work out at least 4 times a week, drink lot's a water, walk to work everyday up and down, plus the fact that I am only 21!!! I'm not saying that everything what I do is absolutely perfect of course once and a while I eat pizza and I love eating chocolate but this shouldn't be a problem especially not on my age! I was on the diana since I was 13 and never had any problems at all. I have decided to take it out and see what happens. I do have to say besides the facts that I gained 15 pounds, have lower abdominal pains since a half year I really liked the fact that I didn't have to worry about anything and that my periods stopped. (but then again maybe that's the problem) 2 of my friends also have the mirena and they seem to be doing fine on it. I just think that every female body is different and every woman needs to find the right anti conception that suits them the best. So haliporat I would say just try it if you like it you keep it in if you don't you try something else again.
