Just curious as a woman, is it normal for a man to masturbate while sleeping? My spouse masturbates quite often while sleeping, both his penis and anal area. The bed shaking is waking me up irritated (he does not wake up) and I don't know quite how to approach the subject with him just incase its not something most guys do. Don't want to embaress him. Sorry if I am naive but I just don't have much experience with this. Thanks for any answers.

I have never heard of a man masterbating while asleep. I have heard of nocturnal emmisions (wet dreams) but not physically masterbating themselves. Any chance your man is faking sleep so he doesn't have to admit to you that he's masterbating while your asleep?

Yes, I do masterbate in bed whithout using my hands. I press my body against the bed just like I have sex with a woman or I imagine I am with a woman. I have been doing this for many years and I am not sleepng and sometimes my wife is sleeping next to me and I did explained it to her, she did not mind and sometimes she helped me. I never masterbated using my hand. I don't think your spouse is sleepng but he can't help it for not doing it.

If I can ask? You say you masturbate this way, which is okay. But if your wife is next to you in bed then why are you not just making love to her instead of masturbating?

I have never heard of masturbating during sleep but I suppose its possible. Usually when I am having a sexual dream I am doing the physical act in my mind. I suppose for some people that could have the effect of involuntarily using the hand to manipulate the penis.

So I would say its rare but not impossible....

Hahahahah wow, thats great. Does he actually cum while doing this? Also you might want to ask yourself whether you are giving it up on a regular basis if you think your not (even for a second) then imma go with the "he's totally awake and wacking off theory"

Extremely eHealthy
It's not normal to masturbate in your sleep, neither is it to talk or get up and walk around or opperate a vehicle but people do it. Some people are just wired to opperate in an automatic state while unconscious. There's a lot of study being done about sleepwalking right now and medicaitons being tested to help resist it. If you or someone you know masturbates in their sleep encourage them to talk to a neurologist about it and see what can be done. If they're faking you've kind of cornerred them and if it's a legitimate concern it's a possible solution.

It happens
I have recently experienced this myself. At first I thought it was just wet dreams during dry spells (wife having her period). But a few nights ago, I woke up my wife and she then woke me up. That was kinda awkward to explain. I had assumed it was neurological but apparently it can be physical stimulation as well. I also have a history of sleep walking. I guess I can just hope it doesn't happen when I'm camping with the guys. lol.

My fiance has this same problem. He does not get an erection, but he does play with himself, and does the "jacking off" motions, but his penis is never erect. He does not know why he does this and neither do i?

Men can masturbate in their sleep and as someone pointed out it's not normal but it's not harmful or unhealthy. It means that he is acting out on a stressor that bothers him while awake. The more he is stressed about it the more he will do it. When I first started working in emergency medicine I would do CPR in my sleep. It was annoying. My husband actually masterbates in his sleep, gets up walks to the restroom in his sleep to finish so he doesn't mess up the bed, washes his hands and gets back in bed. He is 54. I'm 37 and it's not a lack of sex. He is fully asleep, never has recollection so it's not a lucid sleep. I think awake masturbation is cool so it's not like he is hiding it. We may never know but I think the next time I'll just help out. Good luck with all of your concerns and don't stress out, everyones body is different.

I agree with DrBraum. Thank you for that very informed answer and well thought-out answer.

My boyfriend masturbates in his sleep as well. He is not an extremely sexual person, but I wonder if it's just stress as the doctor mentioned above. He is stressed out looking for a job, so it's understandable. He has no idea that he does it and it troubles him that he does, but I think it's important to TELL him what's happening. I was upset by it at first, but after talking to him about it, I'm no longer upset. I just told him I might need to jump his bones more often.

Yes, "sleep masturbating" DOES exist.
I am posting this "comment" here at this Site, because I wrote a similar response for the "comments section" following a Yahoo News story -, but it was MYSTERIOUSLY not posted after I clicked "submit". (I guess Yahoo has some kind of PRUDISH censorship software.)
~ Simply put, YES -, indeed "sleep masturbating" DOES occur. Especially during my teens-through-30s, the following scenario would sometimes happen:
~ On some occasions when I would be very physically fatigued and ALSO very horny, I would go to bed and fall into a deep sleep. About 1 1/2 hours later, I would ONLY PARTIALLY "wake up", and be consumed with the urge of SEX !, SEX !, I MUST HAVE SEX ! Since I was un-married, I would then start WILDLY masturbating. I would have enough well-conditioned mental where-with-all to go into the bathroom (despite that I was essentially "sleep-walking"), where I would "finish" my penile stroking. On these occasions, I have LITERALLY come to orgasm after only about 12 SECONDS of intense stimulation -, with my penis only somewhat erect (ordinarily, orgasm never happens to me without a full erection.) Also, only about the time that I was ejaculating did I actually come to be decently "awake".
~ It has occurred to me that incidents like this are probably why the slang term "sleeping with" someone, has long been a euphemism for "having copulation". Considering this phenomenon of "sleep sex", if a guy and a female literally "sleep together", then, sooner or later, they WILL figuratively "sleep together" also.

The person could just be putting on a show. It, I think has to do with the male ego. I'll explain. I shared an apt with several other college guys. On breaks most of them when home. The room I slept in had one bunk and a singe bed across from the bunk. One break my roommates went home. A foot player we knew who stayed in the dorms could not go home till later in the week but was not allowed to stayed in the dorm. So he stayed in my apt and slept on the bed across from the bunk. I slept on the bottom bunk.Late in the morning the first night I awoke to the sound of the guy masturbating. (Later I realized he must have pulled the curtain open so that the light from the outside would make it easy for me to watch him.) I could hear and see the whole event with no problem. The first night I just thought he was asleep and did not know he was doing it. But he did the same thing the next two nights then went home on the forth day. I came to realize he was just putting on a show for me. He was simply getting a kick out of me watching. He knew I was awake because he would make a lot of noise in doing it until he saw that I had awakened. I just stayed in bed and watched not moving while he put on his show. Then he would go onto sleep. During the day we never said a word about it. He went home and I never saw him do it again. Like I said I think it was some kind of male ego thing and some how he felt comfortable enough to put on a show for me, and knew it would not bother me and that I would keep it to myself. Really brave of him if you think about.

How do you stop this?
Does anyone know how to stop or has anyone tried to stop this? What's your progress?

I have this same problem and I have no idea how to stop.

i do not look at porn, undress women in my mind, fantasize about sex during the day--none of that. However, it does happen when I'm stressed and it's like I'm half-awake. I'm conscious enough to know (analytically) what's happening, but unconscious enough to still be out of clear decision-making or have clarity of mind enough to stop rather than being driven by the desire to find release. It's the weirdest thing. A puzzle I can't yet solve. And no, it's not healthy, though it's somewhat common.

Thanks for any input!

My boyfriend jacks off
Okay, I'm going through the same thing. Funny thing is, this morning I finally told my boyfriend about the situation instead of hiding it inside. We then had an ugly arguement because I felt as if he was lying. I was awake for 10minutes literally laying on him and it's just so weird how he would do such a thing while I'm on his body, lol come on! REALLY! He literally jacks off in his sleep, but there are times where he actually does masterbate while awake, and I honestly think its pretty hot. It's really all natural. I'm so glad I'm not the only girlfriend dealing with all this! Lol thanks for the great information everyone!
