I posted this under other thread but was wondering if anyone here knew anything??
Okay got a question how easy is it to contract meningitis??

My son was in the hospital with rsv brochiolitis hes only 5 weeks old and never had the vaccine yet or any for that matter, anyways he ended up in the hospital for a week. One of the parent I was talking too her son (room beside ours) had meningitis and he still needed a month of antibiotics to ge rid of it im so afraid my lil man may get this as the mother picked up my son(i didnt find out till later what her son had(during a smoke break) I asked hubby but hes isnt all that familiar with meningitis so was wondering what is the incubation period and is it possible that (the mom) could have been a carrier)?? How long does it take for symptoms to show?? You have to take into consideration my son had a weakened immune system during this period and the other mom was in contact with me for 5 days and my son 3.

Hi jess don't really have much info on meningitis but from wot i've learned it depends on the type of the meningitis a person has.
Normally the incubation period would be from 2 days and could be up to 3 weeks.
Do you know wot type the child was?
It could prob be bacterial because u said the baby also is in nicu which is normally passed down by the mother to the infant...Influenced by gbs, listeria, or e-coli...And I seriously doubt that it could be airborne
the other form would be viral which is normally caught if you're travelling to countries or places with higher risks of meningitis but is normally cured within a week or so

the earliest symptom would prob be similar to cam's rsv coz it would first hit the respiratory system then tiny red or brown pin prick marks which can change into purple blotches or blood blisters
if a glass tumbler is pressed firmly against a septicaemic rash, the marks will not fade. You will be able to see the marks through the glass (tumbler test.
If these symptoms are visible you should rush the patient to the hospital
cam won'tprob have it coz although his got weaker immune system he also developed antibodies to fight a similar infection that he has.Hth and try not to worry to much just enjoy lookin after your babies
