Q: Endurance Running

I need to know, what is the best routine to gain running stamina. I ran a little over a mile tonight, but how often should I run? I need to be able to run about 5 miles and I have about a year and a half to do it. I mostly try to wait a day for my muscles to regrow, but if they are still sore is it wrong to go ahead and run? Any input would be appreciated.
