Hi my name is michelle and I am 21 years old. I have a mirena iud for about 2/ 2 and a half years now and I am starting to get concerned about a few thing now. Ever since I git my iud I have gained lot's of weight (like 15lbs)especially on the top area of my body (shoulders and belly) and it doesn;t seem to want to come off iw ork out alot and my diet is pretty much okay. And since a half year to a year I have been getting some acne on my forhead wich I never had before and my skin is getting very oily and lot's of blackheads on my nose. Besides this I have been noticing that I have more and darker hairs growing all over my body. I have never had problems with this before. About a year ago I moved form holland to toronto where I am living now, could all of this maybe be coming from stress??? I also been having since the last few months pretty bad stomach cramps once and a while. I had it checked out but the docter said everything was good. I haven't been having any problems further at all I don;t get my period at all so I love it. But then again I read once that not getting your period means not making enough female hormones so that's why I can be growing more hairs and getting man shoulders. Can someone please help me and give soem advice???? Thanks

Mirena is hormonal and can cause your symptoms..But if your diet is only "okay" than you could improve by calories counting. And exercising an hour a day, like I do helps dramatically.

If this bothers you you may switch to a copper iud easily.

I know exactly what you are talking about. I've had mine in for 4 years, and not only have I gained 15 pounds that I cannot lose (and my diet is great, and I excersize), but my ribcage has expanded. I can no longer wear the same size shirts, because the upper half of my body has gotten thicker. Thank goodness i'm not the only one, because I was starting to worry. I wonder if this hormone affects a very few of us in this extreme way. I think i'm taking mine out, just to see what happens. (is it possible to shrink?)

Hi freemom,
thank you soooo much for responding! I'm also so glad that I am not the only one with these symptons and that it is not all in my head. I the docter told me that my weight gane wasn't because of the iud, but I doubt that. I am 21 years old, I am active and I probally eat better then any other 21 year old I know. Where else is it coming from? I have decided to get it taken out and see what happens. I was using the diana pil since I was 13 years old and seem to be doing perfectly fine on that. But before I think I am going to let my body rest for a while before I start using the pil again.
I sooo hope that after I take it out will lose my 15 pound again and start looking like my old self. ( my size 6 on top and bottom and not 6 on bottom and 10 top!!!) I hope there are other people that had these symtons and get tell us a little more about what happend after they got it taken out. My appointment is in june and can't wait actually. I hope you make a good decision for yourself to. Thank you so much for sharing your story and please let me know again if you have any more info or story's.
Michelle

I am 24
wiegh 118 I am 5'5 I eat 1600 calories a day, only diet drinks, no bread or processed food. And lots of fruit.

Have you considered switching to a non hormonal iud? At least then you would know if it was the iud, or if you needed to lower your calories intake.

No, I haven't. I've decided to take it out. And I know for sure it's not my calorie intake, it can't be. I don;t believe in not eating any calories like bread and pasta. I've lived in holland my whole life and there you do nothing else then eating bread and pasta. That's just some stupid north american thing. Just compare the eating habits between europeans and north americans and then compare how they look. I really appreciate your advice, but that's really not it. I made my appointment and it's coming out. So I will find out adventually if it was the iud or not. I never even had an idea it might be coming from my iud until I started putting the pieces together and reading other people story's.

Yeah have it taken out.. Consider a non hormonal iud... It will offer great protection without side effects.

I am 29 and have had the Mirena for 3 years now. I had it put in after my 2nd boy. I have not had a period since they put it in but last year I gained almost 60 pounds and nothing in my life changed. I have been working out now for 4 months and have not lost a thing pounds or inches wise. At least I have stopped the weight gain, but I feel pretty sure it's the IUD as I have been really really moody this past year and have always been really sensitive to hormones.
