Q: Why is my Sore Throat worse when I first Wake Up...and Disap
asked by: DoctorQuestion on March 18th, 2006
Hello,

For the past almost two weeks, i've been waking up with a soar throat. It feels a little bit weird to talk (kinda tingly?) but I don't sound any different. After eating my breakfast, the soarness is completely gone and usually won't return untill the following morning. The only time it does return is sometimes mid-day between lunch and dinner, and it seems that just eating food will fix it. Even when it does return mid-day it is never as bad as when I initially wake up.

Only other helpfull information is that my nose has been a LITTLE bit runy on and off through these two weeks. Some days i'll have to blow it once or twice, others none.. but in my past experience when i'm healthy I don't have to at all.

I'm a non smoker and never have in my life. Non drinker and never have heavily in my life. No current medication and no allergies.

You are probably suffering from sinuses and nose inflammation (sinusitis and naso-pharyngitis). Mucus from the sinuses and nose goes down the pharynx and stops in the throat during the night because of the horizontal body position. That’s why when you wake up you feel sore throat. During the day, because of the straight body position the mucus easy slips down the pharynx and can be easily swallowed when reaches the throat. Food ingestion can also contribute for easier mucus swallowing.
