Q: Tmj Related? Please Help!

Hi. I'm 36 years old, male and from the uk. I've been having problems for a couple of years now and I feel i'm being passed around various doctors and specialists, yet i'm getting nowhere in terms of feeling any better. Any advice would be really appreciated!

Several years ago I was getting chronic pain on the upper left side of my jaw. At the time I had a bad phobia of dentists, but I assumed the problem was dental. Eventually the pain became so bad that I visited a dentist who extracted a wisdom tooth from the upper left side of my mouth. I assumed this would cure the pain, but it didn't. I visited my doctor who said I had a problem with tmj. He referred me to the local hospital where a mouth guard thing was made for me to wear at night. This seemed to cure the problem and the pain went away.

About 2 years ago I became extremely dizzy while at work. My eyesight became kind of like tunnel vision. I have had tinnitus for many years, but it got worse, especially in the left ear. The skin behind my left ear also feels numb and the ear itself feels blocked - a bit like somebody is poking a pencil in it or something - like a fullness in the ear. I've had various tests done including ct and mri scans but nothing has shown up. I have been diagnosed as having chronic fatigue syndrome, although I honestly feel that is not the problem. The only time I have suffered from extreme fatigue is when the doctor prescribed me some tablets for hypertension. When I stopped taking those the fatigue disappeared. I have no pain or other symptoms related to cfs. After reading about some of the symptoms of tmj I am concerned that this could be the cause of my problems. My jaw clicks when I move it side to side and i've never been able to open my mouth very wide. I also grind my teeth and clench my jaw at night.

What do you guys think? Does this sound like it could be related to tmj? If so, what should I do next, because I have mentioned this theory to my doctor but he doesn't seem convinced?

Yes, I know exactly how u feel. I think you have tmj. I have the same exact thing and same symptoms.. I think u should go to a tmj specialist or tell your doctor you think u may have tmj,

i have it too and I am going to the orthodontist for a mouthguard at night, because my tmj is from grinding my teeth at night.

What you describe are tmj symptoms. When's the last time your bite splint was adjusted? You might need a new or different kind of bite splint. I would check that out before anything else.

Tmj can make one tired because of first, pain, but also if you are grinding and/or clenching at night, you are not getting the quantity and quality of sleep you need. If you can, try valium for a couple of weeks and see if that helps at bedtime.

Some of the Obvious
Limit alchol and caffenine........Really this helps an incredible amount. That goes along with stress, if you have problems with stress in your life, the stress bug finds a way to vent right through your tmj, along w/ those life style changes try some physical therapy.
