Q: Treating SLE with a healthy diet
asked by: DoctorQuestion on March 15th, 2006
My husband and I were debating the diet-immune system question last night and I realized that I am completely confused! I am being treated with 60 mg prednisone and 15 mg/week methotrexate, plus 400 mg plaquenil. The prenisone and/or methotrexate are used to weaken the immune system in order to bring this flare under control I think I am right so far. My question concerns my diet. I am trying to eat foods that will boost my immune system. While common sense tells us that eating a healty balance diet is always good for us, something about taking drugs to weaken our immune system, and then eating foods that will boost it, seems somewhat incongruous. Thanks for your time

There is no food that can boost the immune system as much as prednisone and metotrexate can weaken it. You can continue eating healthy foods (garlic!, fruits, vegetables, whole grains) because the immune system still protects you from many infective agents (although it is responsible for developing SLE).
