asked by: DoctorQuestion on March 13th, 2006
Hi,

Last sunday i had unprotected sex, By tuesday I went to my local Health Department and was given Lo Ovral (8 pills/ 4 every 12 hours) as an ECP method. I Started my period monday, the day before I took these. I had a normal period, then today the 8 th day I began to bleed heavy like I would the first few days of my usual menstral cycle, my question is does taking ECP cause extended length in periods and heavier bleeding.? thanks

Yes, taking the Emergency Contraceptive Pill (ECP) can cause various menstrual irregularities. That’s why it is not recommended as a habitual contraceptive method but only used as an emergency post-coital contraception.
