Q: Saw Nutritionist

Hello, now I am a little confused...I saw the nutritionist today due my ogtt results. She said I could pretty much eat whatever I wanted, if I had candy to make sure I eat protein with it, if I drank alcohol to make sure I did it w/dinner. If I wanted to have candy or a candy bar to make sure I ate it with protein. She told me everything that is kinda the opposite of what I have been reading on the internet?
She said I needed to add more carbs to my diet, that is why I am so tired, also to have whole grain breads, pasta, etc.
Now I am confused, I was eating pretty much what I wanted and that is why I felt so bad.
My 3 hr mark was way to low(44mg) so she said to eat breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner.
Has anyone else had this experience? Help me understand!

This is why going to see a nutrionist is a bunch of crap. You need to limit carbohydrates at first and absolutely avoid candy. The only way you could eat that would be if you were fasting hypoglycemic, which you're not. What were your test results? Give them to me and i'll tell you the best approach, or you can just try my diet.

My results were
86-fasting
128-half hr
89-1hr
75-2hr
44mg-3 hr
i think you mentioned to me before that I had reactive hypoglycemia. So you really think nutritionists don't know what theyare talking about? I was surprised she told me I could have what I want, just make sure I have protein w/whatever it is I am having and to make sure I drink sugarfree/ and have caffeine free drinks -avoid caffeine.
I would try your diet, but I am so picky!!!!!!!!!!!!! And don't we want to get our sugar up some, between 70-120?
I can say I felt better with what I was eating, almost no carbs, or good carbs, still a little tired, she said that was b/c I didn't have enough carbs in my diet???

Yep, that's reactive hypoglycemia. Supposedly, the type you have, "classical form," can be treated by eating three regular meals plus snacks. You're supposed to have a snack, which is pretty much a smaller meal, before the drop you see on the test. This means, you eat breakfast, and then, based on your results, you eat again about 2 1/2 hours after that. This is what i've read. I'm sure there are good nutritionists out there, but yours is not one of them. Not understanding simple human biology is pretty dangerous. It's kind of sad, but we probably know way more about it than she does, otherwise she wouldn't have told you to eat candy. Be careful of sugarfree drinks, you should not be having artificial sweeteners. Anything without caffeine like caffeine-free tea is perfectly okay. I know, my diet is a little intense, but trust me it works. You could always try a variation of it. Getting your sugar up is important, yes, but it won't happen properly unless your body learns to do it itself. Just throwing candy in there would technically do that, but then the pancreas would overcompensate and it would just get worse. Too many carbs will do this too, apparently your nutritionist doesn't get this. Find a level that feels comfortable to you. Maybe start at 100g a day and see where that leaves you. If you feel like you need more, try it, but if you notice yourself getting less tired but more panicky (or whatever your symptoms typically are), go back down. This means the tiredness was simply your body still adjusting to its new diet, nothing more.

As always, thank you for all your info, I feel like all I do is complain about my doctors(my old one, my new one is great!) and now my nutritionist.
I feel you are right on target as far as the meal and snack thing go, and my body usually tells me the same thing, b/c I can eat breakfast and feel my symptoms start again-headache, hungry, anxiosness, ect. I hate to say it but I think I am just going to let everything she said today go in one ear and out the other.
I would be willing to try a variation of your diet, but the only kind of berry I like are strawberrrys, don't like hummus, love oranges, grapes(i know they are not good at this point), tangerines, peaches, necterines, brocalli, cauliflower, hate any kind of beans except green beans, I can't remember what else you had on there, but I will look again.
I am a type of person who likes lists that I can pick from, knowing I can have this and this is so much easier than saying have one protein, one starch, etc., I guess it could be laziness?
Thank you for always responding, you should become a nutritionist, you seam to know so much!

Well, when there's no one to help you around and no one who has a clue, you figure things out on your own. I have a list of things to avoid, make sure to look that over. Always try fruit in small portions to see how you react at first. It may sound lame, but seriously only eat a single slice of an orange to see what it does. Then, add more as you see fit. Don't eat too much broccoli, it will depete calcium.

that is exactly how I feel! I need to know what exactly I can eat. Rather than saying - have 25g of protein with every meal - well how much is that? The counting stuff gets me too! 100g of carbs a day - its takes hard work with this diet for sure....

Im sorry to hear your nutritionist was clueless. There are some good ones out there tho - mine was pretty good - but syhes very big on candida...So I need to be wary of that.
