Q: After 14 Years of Birth Control, it is Normal to Not Bleed o
asked by: DoctorQuestion on March 12th, 2006
I have been on birth control pills for 14 years straight. I got off the pill (in order to try to get pregnant) the first of January and have not had a period or any spotting since. I have missed two periods since getting off the pill. I have taken 2 pregnancy tests and they have both been negative. Is it normal to have not had any bleeding or spotting? If so, how long should I wait before being concerned?

One of the side effects of birth control pills is the temporary lack of ovulation/menstruation after coming off the pill. Women also experience irregular vaginal bleeding (spotting) until ovulation is re-established. During this period of time without ovulations, it is not possible to conceive. This period usually lasts several months. Most women establish ovulation and regular cycles in a period of 6 months after taking oral contraception. The maximum waiting period, however, is 2 years. After that time, doctors may prescribe ovulation inductors to promote conception.
