Q: Should I Stop Using the "NuvaRing"?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on March 12th, 2006
I have just started Nuvaring this month. I had inserted it on the first day of my period like I was told. However, my period usually last me six to seven days. Now that I have started the ring I am on day nine of my period. Is this normal? I'm not sure if this is suppose to be part of the breakthrough bleeding or not. I am also slightly bloated, but I'm associatign this with my period. Should I or should I not stop using the ring?

Menstrual bleeding normally lasts from 3 to 7 days. Menorrhage (prolonged menstrual bleeding) can be functional or organic. Functional bleedings are caused by a hormonal imbalance, perhaps brought on by hormonal contraception (as is probable in your case). Organic bleedings are caused by infections, tumors etc. I recommend you visit a gynecologist. You will probably need to stop using the ring until the problem is solved; in the meantime, be sure to use another form of contraception like condoms.
