Q: Son Experiencing Night Terrors
asked by: DoctorQuestion on March 10th, 2006
My son started having night terrors and sleep walking a few months ago. He now wakes up every night, sometimes even 3 times a night whining and walking around the room. Sometimes he mumbles, takes his clothes out of his closet and wanders around. We usually take him to the bathroom then escort him back to his bed, talking to him the whole time. He doesn't remember anything. We have an upcoming appt. with a sleep specialist, but my concern is that it happens every night, we do not miss one night! I am worried about why he is having these and so often, any suggestions on what I might do to lessen the occurence? Should I push to be seen sooner (his appt is April 27th)? I took him to an ENT because ever since he was a toddler he would breathe strangely when sleeping at times. He would inhale so deeply like he could not get enough air in and it disturbed me greatly. No sleeping during the day or anything of that sort, though. I was just told it was due to the flat bridge on his nose, but it even happens when he breathes with his mouth open.Could these two things be connected? Thank you for any response.

Sleep Disorders Answer A604
It is likely that your son’s sleeping disorder could be a psychiatric disorder typical for his age. First, a specialist will need to exclude neurological disorder(s) such as "temporal epilepsy"; you can request an EEG to help diagnose what is happening. Breathing problems during sleep that do not manifest during the daytime can also be examined by the sleep specialist. There is a real possibility that his condition may connected with a nasal problem/disorder.
