Q: Can Birth Control Pills be Causing a Purple Spot on My Tongu
asked by: DoctorQuestion on March 10th, 2006
I just started taking ortho lo. I am on the first week of my second pack. I have been having slight leg pains, that I attributed to a change in my exercise routine. However, today I noticed a purple spot on my tongue. I researched this, and came to the conclusion that it formed becasue of poor blood circulation. I guess my question is, can this be from the birth control pills? Can poor blood circulation contribute to blood clots? I am very worried, and I do have a family history of clots. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks,
kelli

It doesn't seem that a “purple spot” on your tongue is caused by poor blood circulation. Birth control pills don’t affect the blood circulation directly; they indirectly increase the coagulation ability of the blood. Poor blood circulation can contribute to the formation of blood clots. The risk of blood clotting is bigger when women using birth control pills are also smokers and have pre-existing conditions like coronary ischemic disease, venous circulatory failure diseases, hyper-coagulation conditions, etc. That’s why you mustn’t take birth control pills without a gynecologist’s permission. You can seek advice from this health specialist.
