I have to start taking the birth control bill estrostep in a few days and I was wondering if a lot of women suffered from the weight gain side effect...This is one of my main concerns about it. Also, i'm not exactly sure what is meant by weight gain... Someone told me that the low doses of hormones make your body thinks it's pregnant, which in turn increases your appetite and causes bloating... ?? I really need some feedback...

Weight Gain
Well i've been on the pill for quite some time now and all of them have the same side effects. The pill can make u gain weight. I don't really know why it does, but it does. It does increase ur appetite, but not everybody gains weight. I only gained maybe 3-4 pounds and I have been on them for 3 years now. So don't worry, i'd rather gain 3 pounds than to gain 20 being pregnant

I started the pill about 3 months ago. The first month (about the last week) I felt really bloated but I haven't had that since.
I don't think i've gained any weight...If at all its only been a pound or two. Most women don't gain much weight on the pills, its very little.

When I was on the birth control pills....I did gain weight....And I was always bloated. I was also very moody. This is not to say that this will happen to u. It varies from woman to woman....If u are very concerned about the weight gain, u may want to talk to ur dr, about what type of hormone and the level of hormones in the pill u will be taking.
Best of luck to u

I gained weight and started having extreme anxiety attacks. Like nyc mother said though, every woman is different. You may not have any side effects.

Good luck!

I asked my nurse about it at the womens health clinic and she very decidedly told me weight gain was because it may increase appetite. The went on to say can only put on weight by giving in to that extra appetite and eating inapropriate food. You gain fat by eating fat. I don't know how true this but I just freaked out and ate really well to avoid any weight gain. My bust increased though.

one unmentioned problem with hormonal contraception is that it suppressed thyroid function. So many women experience mild hyopthyroid symptoms; weight gain being one of them.

I don't recomend taking bcps... They nearly killed me a month ago and I am still suffereing the consequences of using them. I used the nuvaring (lowest dose available, supposedly lowered risks) and 27 days into it I was sent to the er with a blood clot. I had *no* risk factors.

that's scary. You do represent the minority with this situation. I been on the pill (orthotryciclen)for a little more than a year and no proplem (knock on wood) no weight gain and no bloating (would have bloating if I don't take the pill) actually I think they do control my weight. I would be definetly heavier without them.

Pill paranoia
Hi there,
You could possibly try a lower estrogen pill, that doesn't really play havock with your hormones. My first experience on the pill was awful, my breasts were larger and sore, I ate more, and felt very moody. This new I'm on hasn't increased my appetite nor attributed to any weight gain. The most important thing is to ask about other pills, that's how I got my pills.
