Q: Cord Blood Banking

My sister has leukemia and she is having a tough time with it. Recently I found out that I am pregnant. I'm nervous that my child could get leukemia in the future. So, I was thinking about banking the cord blood stem cells. Is anyone informed with the banking process? Recommended banks? Has anyone heard about someone using/used cord blood stem cells for a treatment?

Thank for your help in advance!

Melissa

Melissa,
i am sorry to hear about your sister. I've only been looking into this for a couple of months and living in south jersey gives me options to a private pennsylvania bank and a public nj bank. I don't want to donate, as I am not sure what my kids could have one day.
There is a cord blood bank sponsored on this site, I checked it out and I like their web site.

Hi melissa,
i am also sad to hear about your sister . . But all the more reason to bank. I am going to store with a private company. I do not want to donate either. From what I understand it is a easy process . . .You basically bring a kit from the lab of your choice to the hospital when you go into labor and the your Dr. Will extract the cord blood from the umbical cord during delevry . . Then the lab will send someone to pick it up.
My sister-in-law just used maze cord blood located in purchase ny. . . And I think I will use them. It was less then other labs – you pay one upfront fee and no yearly storage fees. . . .Honestly, I was weary of them because they are basically half the price of the other more popular labs . . . But after I called and talked to them and did other research I think I have decided to use them for sure. They are affiliated with new york blood center. . Which is one of the oldest cord blood lab centers around (so the website says). They are also lhave all their licences.
I have the web addres if you want it just privite message me for it.
