Blood Screening Posted: 03-08-06 00:28am
Hi all, just a question out of
curiosity.
Last time I was at the docs, she told me
and my bf that we could have two blood
screening tests done if we wanted. One is
the tetra screen or something like that
that tests for down syndrome and tubal
problems and something else. The other is
to test for cerebral palsey (sp?) she said
it isn't required but is there if we want
it and gave us pamphlets and everything.
I mentioned it to my mom, and she acted
like she was really surprised and said,
"they don't usually ask you about that
unless you're over 30 or at risk."
but i'm pretty sure I remember her
specifically saying i'm not at risk. It's
just weird. Anyway, have any of you had
it or had it mentioned to you?

My doctor has never said anything about
it. Just talk to your doc and make sure
she said you weren't at risk. Maybe she's
just one of those doctors who like to be
thorough even if there isn't really a
reason for it. Maybe she thinks it will
make you feel better.

I have heard that the results from the
screenings can be wildly inaccurate. If
you don't have any risk factors like age
or genetic problems in your family, it
would probably be better just to wait
until your anatomy screening ultrasound at
18-22 weeks.

Its just one of those routinary tests that
they do and the doctors offer it to
allwomen even those who are not @ risk it
is a standard procedure. It is offered
today due to precautionary reasons. I
also got so paranoid when I was offered to
have a trisomy test for down's syndrome
and a spina bifida test I thought somethin
was bleedin wrong with me. I took it
anyway just to make sure it came out like
1 in 7000++ and 1 in 2000+++ risk. You
are considered in a risk if you took the
test and the ratio would be below the cut
off of 250 (that's how it works here).
The accuracy is about 70+% if you took the
test and if you fail the cutoff they
normally offer you amniocentesis and
chorionic villus sampling done from 16-20
wks (not sure) but there's a 2% risk of
mc.
But the others are right if you're not
comfortable with the test don't take it
and just wait for your anomaly scan round
18-21 wks. I just took mine out of
curiosity and to be prepared for any
precautions needed. Be glad that you've
got a responsible doctor, responsible
enough to offer you the standard tests ive
heard that others just dont bother :)
good luck on your pregnancy
I had it done with both my sons. Results
with brian was 1 in 10,000 and they made
an error with jordan and told me 1 in 116!
It was pretty scary! We were going to
have an amniocentesis done until they
realized they used the wrong lmp. To say
the least, I was relieved phew!

I was offered the tests when I got really
sick last time. My baby didn't have
downs or anything....But this time I have
been offered the tests again because there
is something in one of the test that can
tell me and my doctors of my chances of
getting really sick again or if I am going
to be fine. I am going to have the tests
done but it doesn't mean that I am going
to terminate my pregnancy just because I
may or may not get sick. I have asked
that they dont' tell me the results for
downs or spinial bifita (sp??) and they
said that would be fine. The only thing
that may or may not cause a problem would
be levels of a certain thing in the fluids
that could make me sick again,
(pre-exlamsia or eclamsia) and that would
mean taking me out of work for my safty
and the babies safty.
Also how old are you> if you are like
say 13-23 the chances of your baby having
downs or other birthdefects are the same
as being over 34. So they say.
