Q: Can I Lower the Risk of Having a Stroke?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on March 7th, 2006
I have recurring numbness / weakness on my left side of body (TIA) for the past two years, occurs only after exercise.

My test results showed I have >50% stenosis on right cerebral artery, and <50% stenosis on middle cerebral artery.

I was prescribed to take medication, Aspirin Plavix, Lipitor for lowering cholesterol. My blood pressure is around 130/80 during the day, and goes down to 110/70 before/after bed.

Need some advice, what is the best thing to do?
Are there any procedure that can be done to lower my risk for stroke?

The best procedure to help decrease the risk of strokes is to continue taking the current, prescribed medications your doctor has requested... and having a healthy life style. Aspirin and Plavix prevent blood thrombosis in brain arteries. Regular control of blood pressure, blood fats (cholesterol and triglycerides), and blood sugar are strongly recommended. Any abnormal levels should be treated with medications and diet. A healthy life style can be defined as regular physical activity, no smoking and alcohol, healthy food without fats, etc.
