Disida Scan Results
Posted: 03-04-06 21:10pm

Hello,

i have recently had a disida scan. I was able to see the scan as it was being done and saw that the tracer dye showed the liver very well. However, the galbladder showed with some of the small bowel but no dye showed in it. It was completely clear of the dye. What does that tell you. The test took only 50 mins. To get the gb to show with the small bowel with one does of the tracer. Any information will be most appreciated and yes I understand it's just your analysis and i'm to wait until I get the definitive word from my doctor.

Sometimes the radiopharmaceutical used in the disida scan (also called "hida scan" or "hepatobiliary scan") doesn't fill the gallbladder very well, or not at all. It could mean one of a couple things...
1. Your gallbladder is real sick.
2. You ate or drank (other than small sips of plain water) something within 4 hours of starting the scan.
3. You haven't had anything significant to eat in the last 24 hours prior to the scan. (personally I don't recommend fasting longer than 12 hours.)
4. Chronic use of narcotics.

Why the radiopharmaceutical fills the gallbladder and not the bowel (or vice-versa) is an act of nature you cannot control. You can make the gallbladder more likely to fill by fasting at least 4 hours, but no longer than 12. (idealy 6 to 8 hours) this means a meal with at least some fat content to stimulate the gallbladder. Not clear liquids. What happens is that the unstimulated gallbladder gets so filled up with bile, there's no room for the radiopharmaceutical.
Now if after 1 hour, if the gallbladder still doesn't show up, but the bowel does. They may decide to give you a small amount of morphine. If the gallbladder is not badly sick, it will fill up within a half hour after morphine. Someone else will need to drive home.
Very important!!! You cannot have a gallbladder ejection fraction study done after receiving morphine. The result will be useless.
