Q: Problems With Period

I recently lost quite a bit of weight by using a fat-free diet and exercise. I lost twenty-five pounds in about four months, but most of it came off in the last month. By no means do I have an eating disorder, but I haven't had a period in two months and i'm afraid that I might have amenorrhea because of the lack of fat in my diet. Since I reached my weight loss goal, I have started eating more fat and trying to maintain and not lose weight, but I am still exercising nearly every day. Do I need to stop exercising so much? Will I gain weight if I do that? I've been a runner for several years and used running and pilates/yoga to lose weight, so stopping exercising makes me feel extraordinarily lazy. I've spoken to several adults about skipping my period and they seem to think it's normal. I spoke to several nurses when I went to the doctor because of the flu this week and they acted like they heard this all the time. Am I worrying over nothing? If I put fat back in my diet and exercise less, will I start having my period again? But will I also gain weight?

Thanks!

I am no doctor, but I did have an eating disorder, and I would say that not having your period is never a good sign. It usually means something is wrong, especially if you haven't had problems with it before. I would talk to your doctor about it, but try to ease up a bit in general--lay off the exercise a bit, try to eat a more "balanced" diet. And you might gain a little bit of weight, but as long as you are healthy and fit, it shouldn't be enough to drastically affect your appearance.
