Q: Prolapsed Disc In Spine!

I found out 5 months ago that I had a prolapsed disc in my spine. I had an x-ray and I was told then that I had to go for an mri scan, it took around 2 months for that to happen. I am now waiting my results and have been waiting now for 2 weeks. I am in considerable pain, the doctor has given me all sorts of pain killers but most of them make me sick because the really strong ones have codein in them. I am taking amatryptiline (20mg) and iboprufen (600mg). There is nothing I can do. I have phoned up the nhs helpline and there is not much that they can do. I have written an e-mail to my local politician and had no reply. I am only 22 and have a child with my girlfriend. Because we are in a lesbian relationship there is nothing I can do to make sure that if anything happens my girl can help me. I cannot lift our little girl (2 and a hlf years old). This condition is killing me inside as well as a lot of other issues I have with my past. My doctor is referring me to see a psychiatrist but I dont know how long that will take. I am sick of playing the waiting game, is there anything I can do?

Tinker,

i hope you get the results in soon, sounds like you are a canidate for surgery. If codeine bothers you, try some other opiod pain killer. The amytriptylene and ibuprofen won't help alot. Good luck

i cant take vicodin or codeine makes me sick--and the more pain im in the sicker they make me. I suggest darvocet or percocet--wonderful. Never pain free but they dont make me feel sick and take enough edge off to help me live a little atleast. Good luck.

I too have a prolapse disc, and like you the pain was unbearable. I was given diclofenic tablets, which are quite strong. They helped after a while just to take the edge off.

I am now waiting surgery. This happened in june 2005 and its now march 2006, the pain has subsided but I have too be very careful.

Try ringing your consultant and telling him you are getting worse and they may see you sooner, or let them you you can come at short notice...

Hope you feel better soon

Pain In the You Know What!
Sorry about your back. I had a prolased disc 8 years ago (i was 18) then went in to the hospital in the next few months to have a discectomy. It was a good move on my part and I dont regret it at all. I know that its easy to get down when all you can think about is the pain. I have had more problems present themselves in the last year (not due to the old op) and sometimes it can all get a bit much. Something that has helped me is to look at the good things rather than the back.... I know it sounds too simple but sometimes I need to just get out of the situation. It must be frustrating not to be able to lift your daughter, I dont have any kids (yet) and that is something that I do think about. Your daughter will of course love you reguardless.
Chin up. My moto these days is "it could be worse" :-)
something I do find with lifting things is that its easier if they are above the waist? Lying on the ground with my knees bent can relieve the pain too. Might help? Good luck.

Ever tried external therapies?
I qualified in Ayurvedic Medicine and so I can speak only for my field. There are a few non-invasive and non-namipulative treatments you can try. One great treatment is called KathiBasti in which effected area is being pooled for 20-30 minutes in warm medicated oil specifically selected for that particular condition. Whole affected area must be constantly submerged in the oil and the temperature of the oil has to be kept constant. Thus, oil is allowed to slowly penetrate through layers of tissue to the problematic area relaxing muscles, decreasing inflammation and providing nourishment to the surrounding tissue. Treatment is then followed up with massage of the surrounding area and gentle steam with towels. It relieves the pain tremendously, but you would need a few consecutive treatments.

The other treatment is called Pindasveda, which is a special massage with hot herbal poultices. It is not used directly on the prolapsed disc, but helps to break down the stiffness of surrounding area. Relief can be felt already after first treatment.

There are several internal treatments you could go for, but you would have to speak to your Ayurvedic Consultant first.

Always make sure you find a qualified and experienced Ayurvedic therapist or Ayurvedic centre for these treatments.

All the best,

Kristina

I know its very difficult but stay calm. I don't know why you are waiting two weeks for the results, the radiologist should read the films almost straight away, and then send them to the referring doctor, or specialist. Try ringing the radiology clinic, and ask them if the films have been read, and sent to your referring doctor or specialist. If no then ask why not, if yes ring your doctor, and make an appointment to discuss the results in the meantime please stay calm surgeons don't perform surgery on people who are on the verge of a nervous breakdown, i am not making fun of your mental health issues of which i know nothing about, doctors can get funny about peole who are acting emotionally even if they have a good reason.
