Unknown Sleeping Problem
Posted: 12-31-03 01:48am

My boyfriend and I live together and lately, not all the time, but 2 times in the past week and a half, he has done something really weird. He will be sleeping, but he'll get these spells where he's awake, but his eyes aren't open and he can't move. But I know he's awake because he's totally aware of everything that's going on around him. But he feels like his chest gets very heavy and he like, suffocates. I never know what to do. Evenutally he'll gasp really heavily and then he'll be fine, but it's scary and I wish I knew what the problem was. Any ideas?? All responses are appreciated. Thank you.

I suggest he (or you take him!!) see a dr, the only thing that I can think of is sleep apnea, but it doesn't sound like that. I do think it's weird enough to be checked out though!!

Probably the best idea would be to ask your doctor to schedule a sleep latency test.
This is where the medical team would monitor your boyfiends brainwave during sleep and waking hours. It normally requires about 2 days to do, but its curently one of the best methods for determining any sleep disorders that a perso may have, even if they are still dormant at the moment.

Hi there!

Like jenalyn siad, sleep paralysis. You will not get an answer from the doctor - because this topic is slightly more metaphysical.

The most important thing to understand here is to not be afraid of it, as it is a very natural phenomenon.

A man that has researched this topic greatly, and a very good friend of mine : robert bruce, check out his web-site www.Astralpulse.Com

Awake But Can't Move

It's called sleep paralysis. Being aware of everyting around you but cannot move. Occurs just before going to sleep or just after waking up. It isn't actually that rare. He should definitely see a doctor to find out what is causing this to happen. Good luck.
