Q: Started Exercising Recently, Any Tips?

I'm about 6' - 6'1'' I weigh about 125lbs and recently i've recently started working out and would appreciate any suggestions people have. I've done my best to eat healthy, I also take a multivitamin everyday. My goal is to have a decent chest and good abs.

i dont do any cardio as of yet, are there any alternatives to running that I can do in my apartment? If not i'll just start that up, but it would be preferable to not do daily jogging. I've been exercising for a couple weeks now, and my routine consists of push-ups (4 sets of 12) and the three types of general sit ups on that website (crunches, reverse crunches, and the side to side motion to work your obliques), and free weights to work the different muscles in my arms.

I've been doing this about 5 days a week, is this over doing it? Would it benefit me to wait one day between working the same muscle group? I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks much,
-mark

I am starting a new excercize program also and have trouble getting motivated. I find that if I take a multivitamin and turn on music thats loud and makes you move it's easier!

Ok thanks for the response hekela, but if anybody can answer these questions i'd really appreciate it:

- also how long should I be doing cardio for? Thanks in advance

Sorry
Everything I have heard from people who do this for a living is that, you should exercize everyday, but yes give a break in between each muscle group. Do a different set of muscles everyday. At least one hour of cardio 3x a week. Thats what I have been told and it does help with the sore muscles.

It seems that you are quite skinny, and have an ectomorphic body type which is characterized by long arms, torso, and legs, virtually no fat, and a high metabolism. The first thing you need to do is go on a "seafood diet", eat everything you see. Also, each bodypart needs to be worked twice a week with freeweights - start with nominal weights and move up gradually. Cut out any cardio exercises that you do as they will only hinder your progress. You should see some excellent results.

After awhile, you will start noticing fatty areas around your stomach. When this happens, cut down on fats, and use a high protein diet.

Good luck. I was 5'9" 135 when I started the above and now weigh in at 175 of muscle.

Hi hepcat:

i just have a couple questions for you... Are you male or female? Sorry for the silly question, but it makes a difference in the way your body will react to exercise and build muscle. I would definitely try to gain a little bit of weight . You are quite a bit under your healthy body mass index ( number devised by a calculation using your height and weight). For someone your heighth, you would want to weigh between 135 and 170 to be considered in a normal weight range. So maybe try to gain about 10 pounds. In doing so, the healthiest way would be to eat food with lots of nutrition, protein will be key to building muscle. But whatever you do, don't cut back on food at all especially if you have started exercising more than you used to since you will be burning more calories now.

Definitely take a day off between working muscle groups. When you work out hard and you get a little sore, you are actually creating tiny tears in your muscle. Then the muscle repairs itself in the next couple days and gets stronger. But if you don't give it time to repair, you will just do more damage. If you want to work out 5 days a week or more, alternate working body parts on different days. I work out all 5 days but I do certain muscles on certain days in a way that I have a balanced workout with all the mu.Scles in my body getting the work out that they need each week. If you look around on the internet a bit, some websites cangive you some good ideas of how to do this.

Let me know if you have any more questions. Try to gain a little bit of weight!! :)

What I Think
Hi..Well, I am a personal trainer so I can definantly help some...First off you do not need to work out every day...5-6 days a week is good..You do not want to work the same muscles two days in a row, just alternate. And actually for you, you don't need to do much cardio at all!! Not right now..That's just going to burn more fat then anything. Focus one day on back and biceps, next day on shoulder and triceps...And if you want to do cardio..Do it on the third day..Then go back the fourth day to back and biceps and the fifth traps and triceps..And so on..And really you can take off the six and seventh day..Unless you just want to take one day off and continue your cycle...You should be doing less repitions and more weight when you are lifting..And you should definantly start drinking some protein shakes...If you have any more ?'s just ask ;)
