I am taking naproxen for gout, but someone says this is just alleve. If that is the case, why did I need a prescription for this?

You probably do not need a prescription unless getting the medicine is cheaper for you by using your insurance co-pay vs. Over the counter cost.

They are correct though, naproxen is alleve (sp)

does it help with the gout pain?

Whenever I start feeling pain on the bridge of my toe, ankle, or wrist (the signs that a gout episode is starting) I start taking naproxen and half a table spoon of baking soda dissolved in water. The episodes never get serious but its important to take the naproxen for a few days even after the initial signs go away, otherwise the pain comes back.

I have not really changed my diet.

Gout, Alleve, Naproxen Sodium
Whether it matters or not the only anti pain thing with me is Morophine. For many years I have tried asprin ibroprofin and vicodin and none of them have ever worked I just suffered through the minamal anmount of pain. Until I had to be hospitalized do to more serious injurys and the morophine took care of that. Until I was released from the hospital after being in a coma for 5 weeks and the hospital for 3.5 months a calcium deposit built up on my knee and it heart to walk the doctor told me that it would just have to where off since I had not been walking for about four months I needed a pain pill and my gfrasndfather only had a bottle of Alleve in the cabinet I took it and the pain was gone. That was the first time I had ever been releaved by an over the ocunter pain med. But once agian just be aware of your consumption rate. Thge bottle of Alleve says not to exceeed 2 pills in a 24 hour period my doctor instructed me to take two in the morning and two at night. I only take them when I need to. It is best to be regulated medecine free. The prescription for noproxen sodium could have been for a higher amount of it the Alleve is 220mg per dosage.
