Naproxen = Alleve?

I am taking naproxen for gout, but someone says this is just alleve. If that is the case, why did I need a prescription for this?

You probably do not need a prescription unless getting the medicine is cheaper for you by using your insurance co-pay vs. Over the counter cost.

They are correct though, naproxen is alleve (sp)

does it help with the gout pain?

Whenever I start feeling pain on the bridge of my toe, ankle, or wrist (the signs that a gout episode is starting) I start taking naproxen and half a table spoon of baking soda dissolved in water. The episodes never get serious but its important to take the naproxen for a few days even after the initial signs go away, otherwise the pain comes back.

I have not really changed my diet.
