Q: Change In a Health Behavior

Hi everyone! I'm new at this site. I have a problem. I am a college student and in my health class we have been asked to find something that we can change that is health related. I have decided to start exercising. I don't exercise that much. I need to find out what kinds of exercises I should do. Will someone help me?

Hey navi:

i will try to help you the best that I can. I have always been an athlete, played a collegiate sport and am now a personal trainer and I teach work out classes at my local gym. Just need a couple answers to some questions that will make it easier. Are you male or female? Some exercise programs work better if they are designed for a girl or a guy. How old are you? I don't really need to know exactly but if you can give me a range that would work too. Thirdly, do you have any type of physical activity that you like to do already? (something outside, walking, anything that involves activity) does your college offer a student recreation center of some type: a student gym, workout area, swimming pool, etc? I'm sure I can give you some hints to get started. Just let me know what you think about the above.

Nice choice on starting exercise more!! It really is the best thing you could ever do for your body. Talk to you later.

Mk-
thanks for taking the time to help me out. I'm a 18 year old female. The university that I attend does have a fitness center and a gym. The access to these facilities are free for the students. The physical activities that I like to do are aerobics, dance, and volleyball for fun.

Hey navi:

great! You have all the resources in the world for getting started on an exercise program. If you like doing aerobic/ dance type of stuff, this would be the route that I would go. If your university is like mine, then they should have group fitness classes like aerobics. There are so many out there right now... Pilates would be a great one too, or yoga, spinning, and definitely aerobic type classes. I just recommend these because they are fun, effective, and good for beginners because they teach you the right way to work out. I am not quite sure if they are free. But you might want to check into it. Let me know what you think about this and we can go from there. Hope you have a good day!! Talk to you later!!

Extremely eHealthy
Walking steadily is about the best aerobics are good but be careful to not jump around too much as it is hard on your back, swimming is good for all ages. Pilates is good also but if you have medical problems be careful, they even tell you that on the tapes. I was always told to do but not over-do. If you are going to get into some heavy exercising go gradual, I do not know why but some of these female body builders look sad to me and once they quit it is really bad. I love the gym, it is soo relaxing but now with my medical situations, I am unable to do as much as I used to! Good luck to you!
