Q: Severe Diarrhea, Cramping, and Vomiting...Infection?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on February 25th, 2006
I have a sharp pain & throbbing feeling (plus constant tenderness) the last two days directly under the bottom of my lower left rib cage. When it occurs, it also affects the right side of my back (like a cramping feeling). I just took my temperature & it is below normal (97 degrees). I have experienced both severe dirarhea & vomiting the last three days, but haven't yet today. Please advise. Thank you.

It's possible that you are experiencing gastroenterocolitis. Stomach and intestinal inflammation (gastroenterocolitis) is frequently caused by an infective agent that enters the body through food or water (alimentary toxic-infection). I recommend you visit your family doctor for preliminary exams. An examination of the feces (coprocultura, or stool sample) can be requested to identify possible infective agent(s).

Antibiotics usually are not prescribed for common bouts of diarrhea in adults. However, you will most likely receive a lot of liquids and electrolytes to prevent dehydration. If the vomiting continues you will have to receive liquids and electrolytes by intra venous infusion. Diet is very important for stopping diarrhea. Sugar and fats are forbidden in the first days of treatment.
