Scheduled For Gallbladder Surgery, Really Needed?
Posted: 02-25-06 15:21pm

Hi, I am scheduled for gallbladder surgery next month. I have been having upper right and left side pain since december and have had catscan, endoscope, barium enima, ultrasound and hida scan. Everything came back normal except the hida scan showed my gb only functioning at 30%. Dr said having surgery might take care of the pain, but no guarantees. Have seend two doctors, a gi and surgeon and none of them know what the left side pain can be. They did also find a few diverticula, but said that cannot cause the pain I am having. I have it all the time and is definately triggered by eating. I have cancelled the surgery twice to see other doctors, but now have been told there is nothing else they can do and to have it out. I am afraid to do so if it is not going to make it better. Any advice :(

Hi, listen, mine was functioning at 17.2% you are having a problem, but it doe not mean surgery is the cure all or the only option you have. I would suggest cleaning up your diet for a couple of months. If you can, go buy a juicerl. Juice apples and beets, also, radishes twice a day. The beets will thin out the bile and the apples with help crush the stones or sludge. Just try it and you will see. I was told surgery was the only option, but that was 6 months ago and I am fine now...

Hello van71,
I had my gallbladder out last year, after having all tests you had. They all came back normal. With all these tests, they ruled out all other possible causes. Whenever I ate anything with oil or fats I had gallbladder attacks & had pain all the time. At the end I was not eating anything with oil/fat & I was in pain. It was definitely my gallbladder causing all the pain!! When they removed it, it was inflamed with adhesion's all over it. I was afraid before hand as well, but I am happy I had it removed. Leaving it in my body in that state could have taken my life. If it had become more inflamed it can rupture or turn gangrenous. I to had left sided pain from the gb...It can refer pain to other locations.

Hope all goes well for you.

Tests?

Hi, thanks. So they could not see that your gallbladder was inflammed with adhesions through an ultrasound or catscan? That is very scary!

Yes, it was very scary. Those tests showed nothing!! The inflammation had been long standing in order to have the adhesions on it. My gallbladder alos had cholesterol plolpys on the inside. In the ultrasound they could see one, which in itself was no big deal, but in actualoty there were sevreal, which was a big deal. Yes, it was very scary. Those tests showed nothing!! I hated to go through with surgery not knowing that it was my gb for sure. But the years of nausea & then the pain (& severe attacks/pain triggered by eating certain foods) could have not been anything else, so that made my decision much easier. The inflammation had been long standing, in order to have adhesion's on it. My gallbladder also had several cholesterol polyps on the inside.

Having the surgery made a huge difference in my quality of life. I had no idea how sick I had been for so long. It was a gradual decline & I guess you just don't realize how bad you are really feeling. Several people commented on how much healthier I looked right after surgery. I apparently always looked kind of pale, even when I was tan. It's no wonder carrying something diseased around. :(

hope you make the right decision for you. Hope all goes well.

Wow, so you went years dealing with the pain? Did it just get worse as time went on (ie, pain w/o even eating as it progressed)? I am only in my 3rd month of it and it feels like years!! How soon after the tests did you have the surgery?

I am glad it all worked out for you! Thanks.

I was actually sick for about 3/4 years after eating dinner everynight. Never knew why, just dealt with it. Then pain kicked in about 4 months before I ended up having surgery. It progressed till I had pain even without eating. I had every test imaginable over that 3/4 month period. Just got to the point I could not function or leave the house, so I was begging for the surgery.

Hope everything works out for you.

Thanks soo much for sharing your experience! Did you have any problems after the surgery?

I had a little problem with heartburn before surgery & have had more of a problem with it since. Also I take fiber everyday. Since the liver is dripping bile into the intestines on a continuous basis, because there's no gb, it causes some loose stools at times. The fiber takes care of that problem though. For about 8 months after surgery, off & on, I still had some aching where the gb use to be, but that has since went away. It can take awhile to totally heal up after surgery. But these are all minor inconvenience compared to the problems the gb caused.
