Q: Anti-depressant Zoloft And Weight Loss?

I'm taking zoloft and a friend of mine went to a meeting on weight loss. At the meeting she learned that if you are taking any anti-depressant such as zoloft, you will never lose weight because it slows everything down, you will only gain weight. It seems reasonable and convincing but is it really true? I'm trying to lose weight and it has been very hard for me to do so. I am gaining weight but maybe i'm just not trying hard enough to lose weight? Although it certainly seems like i'm trying.. Well I don't know, what are your thoughts on this and are there any anti-depressants that won't affect your weight? Hmmm my choices are to be depressed or overweight... Wow I can't wait to make that decision..

Hello ashley

yup it's true it's been known that anti-d's do slow things down a bit that's why it is a lot harder to loose weight, but don't feel badly, i'm on amptitriptalin and trezadone which are both older anti-d's and find that the same is for me too. But I suggest having a chat with your doc there are so many newer anti-d's that don't cause the weight problem actually i've heard of one that can help with the weight loss as well called wellbutrin i'm not to sure if it's in the same class as anti d's but it does the job too.

Here are two websites with some info you can print these out and take it to the doc if that is a side effect you would rather not have and who would want the weight gain, but I would encourage you to do a little more reaserch and then present it to the doc!

Hope that helps

take care
