4 months ago, my son had head injury due to accident . Altough he is recovered from physical injuries, his coginitive is not recovered yet. His neuro doctor prescribed phenytoin sod 200mg a day as he suspect seizure. My concern is that I don't think my son has a seizure. I also found phenytoin has many adverse effects. Is phenytoin sod has high risk when it given to a patient who doesn't has seizure? I'm reallly concern. I hope somebody will answer my question.

I am so sorry that your son had such an injury and is still having problems. I have read that giving propholactic anti seizure meds after head injury is not uncommon. Did the doctor run an eeg to see if there is abnormal activity to support the idea he is having seizures?

If the cognitive problems are things like memory, that is also pretty common post concussion and might get better in time on its own.

If you do not feel that you agree with this doctor or want to make sure it is the best treatment, get a second opinion.

I hope your son starts to do much better very soon.

Hi
Hi there.I started having siezures 6 years ago, after I gave birth to my daughter.I was pescribed a load of drugs,1 including phenytoin.I have never been diagnosed as epileptic but I have taken many aed's.
Recently I have started to see a new neuro. He has started to change my meds.Something he is desperate to do is get me off the phenytoin.I am on 300mg a night. The begining of last month I tried to reduce it,100mg a time. For 3 weeks I was fine but then I started to have some really bad siezures,2 a night. As a result I am back up to 300mg phenytoin. My neuro thinks I have reacted so bad because I have been on this drug for so long.It is very addictive, therefor very hard to stop taking. The thought is there that my body has got used to taking a bunch of drugs it doesn't really need.
I'm sorry if this isn't what you wanted to hear and I suppose every individual is different. But what I have learned is that phenytoin is a dangerous drug in the long run.
Good luck.
